Decreased smoking
In 1985, 40% of Icelanders aged
18-69were smokers, but in 1990the
number had decreased to 32.5%.
There is little difference between the
number of men and women smok-
ing.
In the age group l'rom 75-79, oniy
14% smoke. Four of every ten people
aged 35 - 39 smoke, and that is the
largest group of smokers. But in ail
age groups, smoking has decreased,
and that is probabiy because peopie
are more concious of their health. In
many buildings, smoking is now for-
bidden, and the final goal is:
“Smokef ree Iceland i n the y ear 2000".

Due to Iceland’s unpolluted envi-
ronment, the water is free of all toxic
elemcnts - Icelandic water is just wa-
ter. Laboratoryexperiments have been
carried out in America on Icelandic
water. The results show that it is re-
markably pure. As a matter of fact,
those working on the experiments
thought their equipment was not
working right.
Water exporting is a new field for
Icelandic companies, and only time
will tell how weil it will turn out. But
hope for continued demand arid a
profitable enterprise.
