In Iceland more than a íhous-
and years ago, when dueling for
j life or deatih was a common
practice, sharp-edged slabs of
stone 'were placed within a pre-
scribed area and antagonists
strove to throw one another over
the stone with such force that
the fall broke the victim’s back.
Out of this primitive struggle,
the glíma was developed, a
unique form of wrestling known
only to Ioelanders, and practised
by them ever since the gory
battles of the heathen age. War-
riors, having lost their weaponsj
during a battle, often resortedl

Tryggir góðan árangur
to hand-to-hand combat, and
under such circumstances a
knowledge of Icelandic wrestl-
ing proved highly advantageous.
The Icelandic sagas contain
many references to the glíma,
when heroes of old wrestled
against giants and outlaws. Vic-
tory was a certainty for the Ice-
landic wrestlers, even though
their strength might be consider-
ably less than that of their form-
idable opponents, -for an es-
sential feature of the glíma is
that it enables the weaker man
to hold ihis own against the
stronger.
As time passed and the nation
became more civilized, the glíma
changed. Rules were established
and the death struggle was omit-
ted. The glíma became a game
of skill and dexterity, its pur-
pose being to throw an opponent
without' hurting him. Tihe chief

CANADA í
CARACAS
Caracas var fyrsta borgin í hinni latnesku
Ameríku að bjóða Seagrams myndasafn-
ið af borgum í Canada velkomið.
Hér hrósuðu Venezuela búar safninu í
Museo De Ballas Artes.

schools of the land, at Holar,
Skálholt and Bessastaðir, made
a special feature of the art, for
besides its physical advantages,
the glíma is admirably adapted
to the developement of that
enviable quality which the Ice-
landers call “drengskapur” and
which is as difficult to translate
as it to emulate. It is more than
gentlemanliness—it is more than
good sportsmanship—but it is
something along those lines.
But the glíma was not restrict-
ed to formal athletic meets. It
became the national sport of the
country, and was indulged in
wherever Icelanders met. When
storms raged and it was impos-
sible for fishing boats to row
out to sea, the boat crews sought
entertainment to break the
monotony of their enforced idle-
ness. Sometimes the wrestling
was free—eaoh man could
wrestle with any individual will-
ing to take him on, but at other
times the crew of one boat
challenged the crew of another.
