FEMALE DEER MAY BE
SHOT SOUTH OF 53
Announcement is made by the
Department of Mines and Na-
tural Resources that during the
forthcoming big game season,
November 26th to December 6th,
both dates inclusive, the hunting
of female white-tailed and
jumper deer will be legal in that
portion of Manitoba lying south
of the 53rd parallel of north
latitude.
Regulations provide that only
one deer may be taken during the
season, so that a licensed hunter
may shoot either a buck or a
doe but not both.
Throughout the past several
years there has been a growing
preponderance of female deer,
according to officials of the De-
partment, and the ratio of the
sexes is at present considered to
be out of balance.
With good snow coverage in
all hunting areas this year, the
forthcoming season is considered
to be ideal inasmuch as wounded
animals may be readily tracked
down.

Benefits and Obligalions (Section 9 of Act)
The maximum amount which the Director may spend on an
individual establishment, whether full time farming, small holding,
or small holding coupled with commercial fishing, is $6,000, of
which up $1,200 may be spent on livestock, farm equipment and
fishing gear, but the maximum of $1,200, available for livestock
and equipment is correspondingly decreased as the cost to the
Director for land and permanent improvements increases above
$4,800, up to the maximum of $6,000. For example, when the cost
of land and buildings is $5,400, only $600 remains for the purchase
of livestock and equipment. When the cost of land and buildings
is $6,000, nothing remains for the purchase of livestock and
equipment.
A veteran so established must pay m advance 10% of the
amount expended by the Director for land and permanent im-
provements plus any cost over $6,000, and contract to replay two-
thirds of such cost on amortization basis within twenty-five years,
with interest at the rate of 3(4%.
If the veteran complies with the terms of his contract for ten
years, the Dominion thus absorbs approximately 24% of the cost
of land and permanent improvements plus the total cost of the
livestock and equipment or fishing gear supplied to him.
