Kvenfélags Frjálsirúar safnaðar í Winnipeg 1904—1954
Address of Welcome
to
His Excellency The Righi Honorable
VINCENT MASSEY
Governor General of Canada.
from
CANADA PRESS CLUB
Winnipeg, Canada,
May 19th, 1955.
Ef ritað væri yfirlit yfir
starfsemi allra íslenzkra kven-
félaga vestan hafs frá upphafi,
myndi það koma í ljós, að ís-
lenzkt félagslíf hefir hvílt að
miklu leyti á herðum þeirra.
Fljótlega eftir að íslenzkir
söfnuðir voru stofnaðir tóku
konurnar að mynda félög sín
á milli, söfnuðunum, líknar-
málum og ýmsum menningar-
málum til styrktar. Þótt kon-
urnar hefðu litla sem enga
reynslu haft í þessum efnum í
föðurlandi sínu, bar ekki á
öðru en samtök þeirra bless-
uðust og félög þeirra urðu
strax frábærlega vinsæl.
Síðastliðna viku var mér
gefið ofannefnt afmælisrit, og
þótti mér fengur í því, ekki
einungis vegna þess, að ég
hefi nú í nokkur ár reynt að
safna ýmsu því, sem íslend-
ingar hafa gefið út vestan
hafs, heldur og vegna þess, að
ritið er Ijós mynd þess, hve
miklu fámennur en samtaka
hópur kvenna hefir áorkað, og
er gott dæmi um starfsemi
íslenzkra kvenfélaga yfirleitt.
Kvenfélagið var stofnað í
þeim tilgangi að styðja Úní-
tara söfnuðinn, sem var í þann
Veginn að reisa sér nýja
kirkju á gatnamótunum,
Sargent og Sherbrook. Kon-
urnar voru aðeins 21, en þó
lánaðist þeim þegar á fyrsta
ári að afla fjár til að leggja til
kaupa lóðarinnar og á öðru
ári gáfu þær hinni nýju
kirkju „orgel, rafljósatæki og
skápa í eldhúsið, og borð og
stóla í samkomusalinn. Þegar
húið var að borga fyrir orgelið
var ráðist í að kaupa píanó
fyrir samkomusalinn, og
seinna var annað keypt til
fiota í kirkjunni. Þetta var
nauðsynlegt, því oft voru
samkomur ýmist í kirkjunni
eða samkomusalnum." Má
þetta heita vel að verið fyrir
svo fámennan hóp.
Þetta kvenfélag, sem önnur
kvenfélög, aflaði sér fjár
með skemmtisamkomum sín-
úm. Starfsemi þeirra hefir
því fjörgað og byggt upp al-
mennt félagslíf. Fólk hefir
Verið fengið til að skemmta
með söng, ræðuhöldum, upp-
lestri og leiksýningum, og var
það mörgum hvatning til að
^fa sig í ýmsum listum. 1 rit-
inu er birt skemmtiskrá frá
samkomu, sem haldip var
1904. Er hún í 15 liðum, söng-
upplestrar, leikur og þrjár
r*ður! Margt hefir breytzt á
þessum 50 árum.
Kvenfélagið hefir látið sig
Varða margt fleira en hina
kirkjulegu starfsemi. Líknar-
starfsemi alls konar hefir það
innt af hendi, og fyrsta ár til-
veru sinnar tók það kvenrétt-
indamálið á stefnuskrá sína,
enda var fyrsti forseti félags-
ins frú Margrét Benedictson,
ritstjóri Freyju. Fundir fé-
lagsins hafa jafnan farið fram
á íslenzku, svo og samkomur
þess.
Til afmælisritsins hefir
verið vandað vel. Það er 32
blaðsíður á stærð í fallegri
kápu, er Hlaðgerður Krist-
jánsson hefir teiknað. Það er
prýtt mörgum myndum: af
báðum kirkjum safnaðarins;
af sex prestshjónum, er þjón-
að hafa söfnuðunum; af öllum
forsetum kvenfélagsins; af
ýmsum embættiskonum, er
unnið hafa mikilvæg störf; af
konum við félagsstörf sín o. fl.
í útgáfunefnd ritsins voru:
Guðrún Skaptason, Steinunn
Kristjánsson, Hlaðgerður
Kristjánson, Sigríður Árnason
og Margrét Pétursson. Ritaði
Mrs. Skaptason ágrip af sögu
félagsins á íslenzku, en Miss
Pétursson á ensku.
Er ritið um allt hið eiguleg-
asta og konunum til sóma.
„Við konurnar, sem starfað
höfum í útgáfunefnd þessa
rits, höfum haft mikla á-
nægju af að yfirfara bækur
félagsins. Það hefir vakið upp
margar hugljúfar endurminn-
ingar. Það eitt er mikils virði,
að hafa átt samstarf með
hundrað og þrjátíu og sex
konum, sem tilheyrt hafa
þessu félagi, um lengri eða
skemmri tíma.“ (G. S.)
Ritið fæst hjá Björnsson’s
Book Store, 702 Sargent Ave.,
Winnipeg. Verð 50 cents.

Bréf frá Vancouver
Kæra Mrs. Jónsson, —
Þökk skaltu hafa fyrir
greinina, „Hann átti líka sína
galla“, í „Lögbergi“ dags. 21.
apríl.
Ég hefi oftar en einu sinni
reynt að láta í ljósi svipað álit
mitt á þeim þjóðníðingum,
sem mest og bezt gala um
galla þjóðbræðra sinna —
þeim Laxness, Gunnari Gunn-
arssyni, Kristmanni Guð-
mundssyni, og alla leið aftur
til Gests Pálssonar, og að jafn-
aði fengið snoppung fyrir
vikið. Ég man hve ég reiddist
við lestur „Sölku Völku“ og
„Sjálfstæðs fólks“, “In the
Morning of Life,” “Seven
Days Darkness, ’ „Kærleiks-
heimilisins“ og annara sagna
af því tagi, en í þeim er svo
að segja hver einasta persóna
ótugt og ómenni. En þetta er
Your Excellency:
We welcome Your Excel-
lency, the Governor General
of Canada, to this gathering
o f members of the Canada
Press Club and their ladies.
Our pleasure is the greater as
we recall that you are the
first Canadian born repre-
sentative of the Crown to
occupy the highest office of
state in Canada.
The Canada Press Club wel-
comes Your Excellency to the
cosmopolitan City of Winni-
peg where the Club came into
existence almost fourteen
years ago. At that time, when
Your Excellency was at your
post of duty in the defence of
the free nations of the world,
the editors and publishers of
the e t h n i c weeklies and
periodicals in Winnipeg fore-
gathered to studythe way in
which they could most effect-
ively apply themselves to the
immediate needs of contribut-
ing to the war effort, as well
as to the continuing, though
less exacting task of building
in Canada a nation strong and
free. The Club seeks to inter-
pret the Canadian scene and
foster unity, based upon bonds
of freedom and Christian
principles, within a variety
which is bound to obtain in
a nation composed of many
national elements.
Events following the war
have clearly demonstrated, in
a way that could not have
been foreseen, how eá'sential
it is that the resolve of the
Canadian people to guard
those fundamentals of our
way of life be not relaxed.
Both u p o n humanitarian
grounds and upon sound prin-
ciples of nation building in a
land of wide expanse, Canada
has very properly accepted a
large flow of immigrants.
This policy has given rise to
duties of welcome to our im-
migrants, followed by appro-
einmitt það, sem valið er til
að komast á önnur mál og
fyrir framandi augu.
Það má vel vera, að sumum
af þessum háu herrum finnist
að landar sínir séu of tregir
til að beygja sig og auðmýkja
ef minnst er á Lenin og Stalin;
mig grunar að þetta þjái Lax-
ness. En að segja að Landinn
sé fyrir vikið ómenni og óal-
andi er vart réttmæt ályktun.
íslendingar, svona yfirleitt,
eru ekki eins og þessir snjöllu
rithöfundar oft lýsa þeim.
Svo þökk á ný fyrir grein-
ina. Erindi hennar er rétt-
mætt og tímabært.
Vinsamlegast,
B. B.
priate integrating processes.
Members of the Canada Press
Club feel that by reason of
their training as well as their
varied ethnic origins, they are
especially well equipped to
assist in the discharge of these
new duties that have fallen
upon the Canadian people. To
these ends members of the
Club have bent their efforts
in the past and for these pur-
poses they seek to serve in the
future.
The Canada Press Club re-
joices that by your attendance
this afternoon, Your Excel-
lency has made known your
appreciation of the work that
the ethnic weeklies and other
periodicals are endeavoring to
do both in reaching out to
groups who are already Cana-
dians by birth or certificates
of citizenship and to others
who soon will become Cana-
dian citizens. A more en-
couraging gesture could not
have been made by Canada’s
first citizen; a more gracious
act could not have been made
by the highest representative
in Canada of Her Majesty the
Queen.
We welcome Your Excel-
lency, not only as the repre-
sentative of Her Majesty, but
also as an outstanding Cana-
dian who has clearly seen the
need, even in these turbulent
times, of placing due em-
phasis upon the finer sides of
Canadian citizenship. The Re-
port of the Royal Commission
on National Development in
the Arts, Letters and Sciences,
is a guide to inestimable value
to the builders of Canada as
well as a monument to your
wisdom and unabating zeal.
We welcome Your Excel-
lency as a man of letters; a
scholar, whose Alma Mater is
a Canadian University, To-
ronto, of which you are now
Chancellor; a Canadian, who
holds a Master of Arts degree
from that renowned seat of
learning, Oxford. We have
derived encouragement in
noting how continuously in
your utterances on the plat-
form and in permanent record
you have impressed upon the
people of Canada the value of
a study of the humanities as
part of the cultural equip-
ment of the citizen who seeks
to give his best.
The Scottish educator, Gil-
bert Highet Anton, Professor
of Latin Language and Litera-
ture at Columbia University,
reminds his readers that
“every human brain is filled
with unused power” and
points to the teacher who ever
seeks to stimulate something
within the student which,
“mysterious as all vital pro-
cesses”, will cause the ener-
gies of his mind “to combine
into a new, living, active,
creative synthesis”.
In this kindly and most
gracious visit to the Canada
Press Club, Your Excellency
may well have stimulated its
members to draw upon their
unused powers and reaoh
heights of service not attained
before.
Your Excellency! We thank
you sincerely for receiving us
this afternoon. May God give
you strength to continue
many years of noble service
to Canada and her people.
