Toast To Conada
Frá bls. 1.
People everywhere have
enough food, clothing and
shelter.
The same scientific knowl-
ec^ge has given man the power
destroy himself.
The choice is clear. There
can be no doubt that reason-
able men everywhere would
choose the former course. The
9°estion we might ask is:
hat can we as Canadians do
0 improve the chances of cre-
atihg a world in which every
Person can realistically hope

ls °r her capacities to the

^gain reflecting on the
lualities 0f the early settlers
"" fteir honesty and integrity
are the most important. These
are qualities which are of
Undamental importance
^hether we are thinking
a out relationships between
lndividuals or nations. The
lr°portance of adhering to
ese principles cannot be
°veremphasized. We have
"útnessed a marked loss of
respect and prestige by the
"mstern community in the
eyes 0f the world because we
aiied to adhere to these
Púncipies on two important
°Ccasions.
Resourcefulness and in-
§enuity were required by the
early settler and are perhaps
heeded in greater measure to
the problems ahead. The
sc>entific know how has made
Possible to produce vast
^•Pplies of material things.
Ur knowledge of how to
it possible for people to
ake full advantage of this in-
?reased productivity has not

^gence is required to point the

also be useful to bring their
counterparts to live and work
in Canada on an exchange
basis. This type of program
could complement existing ef-
forts. These are but a few of
the areas where new ideas
and approaches are required.
I have tried to single out
the characteristics of the early
Icelandic settlers which are of
particular value to us today.
If I were asked to narrow this
further I would say that
honesty and integrity are the
most fundamental and worth-
while. 1
In conclusion I would like
to say that within the last few
days I have had the great
honor and privilege of talking
to Guttormur J. Guttormson
from Riverton. He is a living
symbol of the kind of honesty
and integrity to which we
should all aspire. He is a man
of wisdom and understanding.
Because of his intellectual
honesty he is completely at
peace with himself and the
world in which he lives. May
we toast Canada — a country
which helped create Guttorm-
ur J. Guttormson — and a
country which offers all of
us an opportunity to aspire to
the heights he has attained.

ILO krefsl úrsagnar
Suður-Afríku
Alþj óðavinnumálastof nunin
(ILO) lauk nýlega 45. vinnu-
málaþingi sínu í Genf. Sam-
þykkt var m. a. upptaka
þriggja nýrra aðildarríkja, en
þau eru Kuwait, Máritanía og
Sierra Leone. Eru þá aðildar-
ríki stofnunarinnar orðin 100
talsins.
Áður en gengið var til at-
kvæða um upptöku Máritan-
íu fór fulltrúi Marokkós þess
á leit, að ríkinu yrði ekki veitt
upptaka fyrr en spurningin
um aðild þess að Sameinuðu
þjóðunum hefði verið af-
greidd. Fulltrúi Marokkós
lýsti því yfir, að Máritanía
væri ekki löglegt ríki, heldur
hluti af konungdæminu Ma-
rokkó.
Þingið samþykkti allmarg-
ar ályktanir um efni, sem ekki
voru á dagskrá þess. í einni
þessara ályktana er krafa um
að Suður-Afríku verði úthýst
úr stofnuninni. Segir svo orð-
rétt í ályktuninni:
„Þingið
— fordæmir kynþáttastefnu
Suður Afríku;
— lætur í ljós dýpstu samúð
með þeim hluta íbúanna í
S.-Afríku, sem sjá helg-
ustu réttindi sín fótum
troðin af apartheid-stefnu
stjórnarinnar, og með þeim
hugrökku mönnum, sem
berjast gegn aparlheid án
tillits til kynþáttar eða
hörundslitar;
— lýsir því yfir að áfram-
haldandi aðild Suður-Afr-
íku að stofnuninni brjóti
í bága við tilgang hennar;
— ályktar að fara þess á leit
við stjórn Alþjóðvinnu-
málaskrifstofunnar að hún
ráðleggi lýðveldinu Suður-
Afríku að segja sig úr
stofnuninni, þangað til að
því kemur að stjórn lands-
ins leggi niður apartheid
.. . og að biðja stjórn skrif-
stofunnar að tryggja skjóta
framkvæmd þessarar á-
lyktunar."
Ályktunin var samþykkt
með 163 atkvæðum gegn engu,
en 89 ríki sátu hjá við at-
kvæðagreiðsluna.
