Lögberg-Heimskringla - 26.09.1974, Side 3
LÖGBERG-HEIMSKRINGLA, FIMMTUDAGINN 26. SEPTEMBER 1974 3 WHAT'S WITH THE LITTLE FINGER? As a member of the human anatomy, the little fingar is of such small consequence that it’s practically ignored when the RCMP has occasion to check on its four associates. The idea is that it never does anything and so never leaves a' mark anywhere. Though the fifth finger may continue to fool the rest of us, it seems that it has revealed itself to the RCMP as an ever idle bystander, nice to have on a hand because we’ve grown used to it, but completély outside the realm of use- fulness. It’s as decorative as a kiss curl on a cherub’s cheek and juSt as useful. It crooks itself prettily when a thumb and forefinger pick up a teacup, it wears its nail daintily and is a small source of income for manicurists and people who deal in cosmetics. As for those who operate unsanctioned enterprises on the outer edges of the law, the RCMP feels they have little to fear from their tiniest fingers, which are inclined to curl in or jut out and keep themselves clean when a job is in process, leavingjio traecable track anywhere. They can be safely cherished as handy eccessories for holding such Status symbols as diamond rings when the owners scale the heights in their field. It is even said that if this extra digit gets in the way of a finger-printer, the no-account impress- ion it leaves is tossed in the æaste basked, since it just hasn’t been known to involve itself with such arduous labors as car theft, burglary, abduction, shoplifting or murder. Gosh, I’d be afraid to underestimate the little finger to that extent, having depended on it for certain muscle jobs most of my life. But dare I point out that the police may be missing out in their scientific approach to the nature of the little finger, unless of course, organists, pianists and typists are above or beyond those activities that draw police attention? Those people appear to be so in a class by themselves when it comes to relations with their little fingers that it is not entirely improbable tha't they may be a singular race. If anything, their 'little fingers exceed tJhe others in strength and agility. Keyboards are deliberately designed to get the most out them and I, for one, would hate to face the consequences if the P’s and Q’s, A’s and Z’s, semi colons, periods and question marks on my typwriter were left to the mightiest members of my hand. It could get me into troble^ Imagine a Q-less queen, a prince wi'thout his beginn- ing, attire without an A, and zodiac without a Z, and what with no semi colons, periods and question marks? Think of the poor proof reader tussling with a sentence like this: “Serching for the odic in the morning aer, I cme uon ic- tures of the ueen and her rince rigly ttired.” Said proof reader could translate it this way perhaps: “Perching for the exotic in the morning air. I came up with strictures on the teen and her rinse legally retired.” The translation is pretty far out, mind you, but so was my copy, and proof readers know that when a sentence gets of the track there is no lirnit to where it will go. This is what I would have said with the full cooperation of my smallest fingers: “Searching for the zodiac in the morning paper, I came u{x>n pictures of the queen and her prince regally attired.” If kept in trirti, those small pinkies are quite capable of hooking a pail of honey and carrying it home when the big- gies are otherwise occupied, just in case we eccentrics with well developed little fingers in our pay, get absent minded in supermarkets, those scientiffic sleuths who treat them as nobodys might do well to check tiny fingerprints on jam jars, honey pails, vinegar jugs and all things with good hooks and handles.
