THE CLUBS
Robert Asgeirsson
reelected president
Around 65 people attended the annual
general meeting of the Icelandic Canadiar
Club of B.C. last week, and that is a
very good attendance.
Mr. Robert Asgeirsson was reelected
president of the club, and Logberg-
Heimskringla will bring to you a list of all the other
officials in next weeks issue.
Showing of Film
At the meeting the new film about Iceland, They
shouldn’t call Iceland Iceland, was shown, and every-
body seemed to enjoy it very much. Many said that
this was the best film about Iceland, they had ever
seen. — And now it is time for BRANDON, it will be
there October 16th.

SCHOLARSHIPS
THE JON SIGURDSSON CHAPTER
THE following scholarships are awarded armually by
the Jon Sigurdson Chapter of the I.O.D.E:
(a) The Johanna Gudrun Skaptason I.O.D.E. Mem-
orial Scholorship
(b) The Elinborg Hanson I.O.D.E. Memorial Schol-
arship
(c) The Jon Sigurdson Chapter I.O.D.E. Music
Scholarship.
The first two are awarded each year to students who
have successfully completed Grade XII or its equival-
ent and who are presently enrolled in the first year of
a degree course at a Manitoba University.
Candidates will be selected on the basis of academic
excellence, good citizenship, and leadership potential.
Prime consideration will be given to those students
that are of Icelandic ancestry.
Candidates are requested to send a certified resume
of marks, accompanied with the names, addresses and
telephone numbers of three referees — one of whom
should be the principal or vice-principal of the collegi-
ate (high school) from which the candidate obtained
senior matriculation.
(For expediency reference letters may accompany
the application or may be mailed directly to the edu-
cational secretary).
The chapter’s music scholarship is awarded to a
student of Icelandic extraction who has abtained the
highest standing (not less than 70) in piano, violin,
violincello, or voice from the Western Board of Music
or the Royal Conservatory of Toronto (Grade VI or
over).

WHAT IS
LÖGBERG-HEIMSKRINGLA?
— Lögberg-Heimskringla is the only weekly
newspaper published in Icelandic and
English for people throughout North
America with Icelandic ties. In keeping
with changing times, a section of the paper
is now in English and includes a summary
of the Icelandic content.
— Lögberg-Heimskringla is the oldest surviv-
ing ethnic newspaper in Canada, originating
over 90 years ago.
— Lögberg-Heimskringla is a modern publica-
tion geared to meet today’s needs.

Iclandic Canadian Frón:
LOGO DESIGN COMPETITION
With the recent amalgamation of the Ieelandic
Canadian Club and Chapter Frón of the Icelandic Na-
tional League into Icelandic Canadian Frón, there is
the need for a symbol or emblem to represent the or-
ganizations on letterheads and all official documents.
It was decided at a recent meeting of the executive
of Icelandic Canadian Frón that the best method to
select a new symbol, or “logo,” would be to hold a
design competition.
Thes competition is open to all, both young and old,
whether members or nöt.
The symbol should be representative of the ties
between the local Icelandic Community and Iceland,
and may be of any shape or form, as long as it is suit-
able for both letterpress and offset printing, and adapt-
able for letterhead use.
Entries must be on white paper, 8” x 10” or larger,
and should be in black ink or ballpoint.
Enter as many designs as you wish, but each must
be in a separate envelope. Entries should be addressed
to:

The closing date for the contest is OCTOBER 31st,
1977 — all entries should be postmarked not later than
that dáteTo be eligible.
A prize will be awarded for the design judged by
the Executive to be móst suitable. The prize will be
announced at a later date.
The winning entry will become the property of
Icelandic Canadian Frón. No designs will be retumed
unless accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed en-
velope.

HOMESTEAD
At a board meeting of the
Icelandic National League in
Reykjavik earlier this year
the following resolution was
presented and passed unani-
mously:
“To collect all published
works in Icelandic, poems
and prose, by the poet Step-
han G. Stephansson, and don
ate them to the Homestead
Museum now being set up in
his old home by the Alberta
Government”.
Gisli Guftmundsson
The work of collecting this
material was delegated to
the Secretary of the League,
Mr. Gisli Gudmundsson, and
promised to be difficult as
many of the issues were
known to be out of print and
collectors items.
The results up to now are
well beyond expectations
and all the major items have
been secured. In a letter
from the Icelandic National
League the following state-
ment is made:
“For this positive outcome
we want to express our sinc-
ere gratitude to the many
individuals and institutions
for valuable help and gener-
osity...”
“We of the League consid
er it a privilege to be able
to render some help in your
fine project and show in a
small way our gratitude to
Stephan G. Stephansson for
the great litterary treasures
he left behind and the man
he was.”
