The markings have been erected in an eight - square - block area in Vancouver’s downtown Strathcona district. Chinese characters indicate streets like Keefer and East Pender with the English version underneath. City Engineer Bill Curtis says the city responded to a request from the Chinese community to erect t h e signs. Mayor Arthur Phillips and the city council approv- ed the proposal although members voiced concern that every other ethnic commu- nity ín Vancouver would want the expensive replace- ment signs to grace their streets. But council empha- sized that this is a one-time expenditure undertaken as part of the urban renewal plan for the Strathcona area. Vancouver boasts the sec- ond largest Chinatown in N o r t h America, outsized only by that of San Fran- cisco. Canada’s third largest city has a Chinese popula- tion of 80,000 most of whom live outside the downtown area, but the colourful neon- clad pagodas hiding restau- rants, import shops and food stores make the Strathcona district a popular spot for residents and visitors. The city streets depart- ment sought the servicés of a member of Vancouver’s Chinese community to draw the Chinese script in a fa- sion that would be most. ac- ceptable to those who speak and read in different dia- lects.
