Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudagur 26. júíí 1991 • 11 Heatherlreland, David Ennsand Lana Thorarinson Betts will be the featured guests at the Eaton Celebrity Concert at Heather Ireland íslendingadagurinn, August 3, 8 pm. at the Gimli Composite High School. Heather is well known to the Icelan- dic community forherwork suchas sing- ing with the Winnipeg Symphony Or- chestra, Vancouver Opera Company, and CBC Radio. She has also been on Iceland radio. Her taped recording of “Komin Heim - Favourite Icelandic Songs” is very popular. She sang for President Vigdís, on her visit to Vancouver in 1988. In 1989, she sang in Iceland at Canada Days, again for President Vigdís and many of Iccland’s business and political leaders. A television show was also produced in Iceland. While in Iccland, Heather received some new music which she will premiere at the Eaton Celebrity Concert, a feature which you will not want to miss. She is the daughter of Johannes and Bergljot Sigurdson, and the granddaugh- ter of Guttormur J. Guttormsson. David Enns was born in Regina, Sas- katchewan and began studying the piano at age five in the northem Saskatchewan town of Melfort. From the age of seven, he has competed regularly in festivals and competitions both in Melfort, and later in Swift Current, which was his home from age ten until graduating from high school in 1984. He joined the band program as a trombone player in Swift Current and participated in concert bands, jazz bands and combos. Upon graduation from high school, David at- tended the Brandon University School of Music where he studied piano with Dr. Lawrence Jones and Donald Henry. Throughout thistime David took part in several masterclasses, includingtwo sum- mers at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts in both chamber music and solo piano programs. He completed his Bach- elor of Music degree in 1988 and was awarded the Brandon University Silver Medal. Following his undergraduate studies, David spent a year in Iceland where he was Headmaster of the Music School of Flateyri in Önundarfjörður in the West- ern fjords. There he taught piano, trum- pet, trombone, music theory, directed a small band, played organ and directed the church choir, continued to perform, and composed the score of a new play that the drama society of Flateyri performed throughout the Western fjords. After fin- ishing teaching there, David spent eight days at sea working on an Icelandic fish- ing trawler before retuming to Canada. David is presently completing a mas- ter’s degree at McGill University. Upon graduating, he plans to continue his mu- sical studies, teaching and performing. If that doesn’t work out, he hopes to get back on with the fishing trawler. Lana Thorarinson Betts began her flute studies in Edmonton in 1981 as a band student, and later began private lessons with Shelley Younge (1984). She is cur- rently studying flute performance with Timothy Hutchins and is entering her final year of a Bachelor of Music program at McGill University, Montreal. Last sum- mer she was a visiting artist at the Banff Centre of Fine Arts, attending masterclasses with Trevor Wye and Samuel Baron. For the past three years, Lana has been working in Montreal as a choral singer. Currently she is a soprano section leader at St. George’s Anglican Church and pre- viously held the same position at the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul under the direction of Patrick Wedd. Lana Thorarinson Betts has been the winner of several scholarships and com- petitions, including the Edmonton Hátiöarkveöjur frá Arborg David Enns and Lana Thorarinson Betts Kiwanis Festival Provincial Senior Class, as well as the Alberta College Conserva- tory Concerto Competition in 1987. Lana is the daughter of Lorraine Thorarinson Betts, daughter of Anna (Sigvaldson) and the late Kristjan Thorarinson of Riverton. Her father, Dennis Olson, is the son of Lara (Einarson) and the late Raymond Olson, formerly of Riverton now of Stonewall, Manitoba. Lorrainc is now married to Gamett Betts of Winnipeg and together they have greatly encouraged and sup: ported their daughter throughout her musical endeavours. Lana’s future plans include graduate studies possibly in Scandinavia, and in the immediate future performing in sev- eral recitals with David Enns.
