Lögberg-Heimskringla - 09.10.1992, Blaðsíða 6
6 • Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudagur 9. október 1992 Letters to the Editor Signy deserved better The obituary on Signy Eaton which you ran in your September 18 edition leaves a lot to be desired. I think you could have published a more sensitive piece on Signy, rather than simply reprint the Canadian Press item complete with typos and poor taste. Signy deserved better from her own people in Manitoba. David Scarth Past president, The Icelandic Canadian Club of Toronto Hecla Museum The Descendants and Friends of Hecla Island Heritage Inc. would like to thank you and the staff for all your goodwill extended to us during the opening of the museum. Many thanks Bill Jefferson Letter of Thanks Thank you for your prompt response to my phone call. This is not the book I had thought it was but it is a very welcome addition to my limited stock of Icelandic material. I would like to get a copy of the bio- graphical sketches of the early arrivals, I do not know what it is called but I have seen one in the Betel library room. As a grand nephew of Jón Runólfsson I would like very much to get any of his published works. I had a copy of “Pozulti” but it disappeared. Any suggestions or help you can pro- vide will be veiy much appreciated: P.S. I had the good fortime to meet and chat with Júníus in Reykjavík in 1981. Sincerely, Lárus Westdal Proud of her heritage I was so very pleased to see that your September 4th issue carried my mother’s obituaiy. Mom was very proud of her Icelandic heritage — as am I. Thank you. Sincerely, Leslie Macleod Toronto Descendants found With reference to your letter of inquiry in the Lögberg-Heimskringla, Sept. 4, 1992, asking for information about the descendants of Guðrún Sigurjónsdóttir and Karl Jónasson, I may be able to be of some assistance. When your query first appeared in an earlier issue of the newspaper, I contacted George Munday of Oakville, Ontario. It is my understand- ing that he is a descendant of the above couple that emigrated from Iceland to Canada in 1913. I sent him a Xerox copy from the L-H of your request. The family moved to Ontario years ago, and that is undoubtedly why a search in Manitoba tumed up very little information. Every “member” of our Toronto asso- ciation has a copy of the Directory for networking purposes; that is how the Munday name came to my notice. I have no idea whether George has, as yet, contacted you. It is my under- standing that he is Hugrún Kristín’s son, therefore, he is George Jr., (junior) grandson to Guðrún and Karl Jónasson. Your letter to the newspaper does not state why you are attempting to contact distant relatives, nor whether or not an answer in English would be fine. Are you working on a family history and wish to extend the geneal- ogy? I have already made initial contact with the family. George is hoping to hear from you soon. My best wishes in your research efforts Yours sincerely, Donald E.
