Öfrísk means
pregnant?
Fríð means pretty - ófríð
me&ns homely. Dýr means
costly - ódýr means cheap.
Frísk means healthy - ófrísk means
pregnant.
A letter just came from a cousin
in Iceland telling us she was very
happily ófrísk. It brought to mind
an amusing anecdote frora my last
trip there when I was 67.
While growing up in Manitoba
the word ófrísk was unknown to
me. A pregnant woman was “van-
fær” or simply “svona”—or in
English it was “that way.”
So when I heard the word
ófríslc in Iceland I thought it meant
sick, perhaps a cold. One day I felt
shalcy and feverish. “Ég er ófrísk,”
I said.
“Hvað segir þú?” said Ella.
“Nú?” said Ingi
“USS” said somebody else.
That’s when I learned that
ófrísk means pregnant.

The Gimli lcelandic Pácrnác:
Iam writing in response to Tom
Oleson’s article, requesting peo-
ple’s thoughts on the last Icelandic
Celebration. My wife and I had timed
our trip across Canada so that we
would be in the area for the celebration,
this last summer. Our first time at the
celebration was in the summer of 1975.
Our memories of the 75 celebration,
were of a picnic atmosphere with a get
together of family and friends. We were
disappointed to find that part of the
event was more of a street fair and car-
nival in nature. On the day of the pro-
gram, there was no provision for people
to get out of the sun and the noise from
the camival rides made it impossible to
properly hear the program. There were
no provisions for the handicapped to
get close to the grounds, for the pro-
gram. Through conversations with peo-
ple of the Interlake Area, we found that
many Icelanders had not been to the
celebration for quite a few years.
We submit the following ideas which
we feel have merit, for consideration.
My wife suggests the following. Let the
town of Gimli, have their street fair and
camival and rotate the program and pic-
nic portion, to otlier communities, using
Compliments of.

a different one each year. There is for
instance Riverton, Hecla Island, Arborg,
Lundar, Selkirk and Winnipeg that
might want to take turns. This would
facilitate many who can’t make the trip
away from their home area to partici-
pate. This we believe will involve more
people, and bolster the Icelandic spirit.
A portable tent could be purchased
and other equipment rented or bor-
rowed, which would travel to the differ-
ent communities. This would let Gimli
have their Gimli Days and let the
Icelanders have their íslendin-
gadagurinn.
We hope that this will be taken as
constructive criticism and not taken
wrongly.

Tom Oleson’s article on the
Icelandic Festival is very timely
and I hope you get some worth-
while response to it.
Obviously it benefits the community
to have a lot of people coming to it in
terms of the economy so long as this
does not pose crowd control or security
problems.
It helps to dramatize Icelandic her-
itage in North America and general
publicity is much greater than of old. It
does much for a community that is try-
ing to promote tourism, and in fact
being very successful in doing so if my
reading of it is correct.
Organizers might give some thought
to having the purely Icelandic part of it,
such as speeches etc., in a hall big
enough to accomodate all who want to
enjoy that without the noise and disin-
terested crowds outside.
Perhaps this part of it could be han-
dled by L-H with reservations in order
and some charge for admission. It could
be a worthwhile fund raising for L-H.
