Kirsten Wolf Receives Fellowship
There are many professors who
receive grants to do research, but
the opportunity to also receive
release time to complete a research pro-
ject and publish is prized even more.
Such is the case for three professors
recently named 1994-95 Fellows of the
Institute for the Humanities as a result
of a competition held this spring.
They are Professors Kirsten Wolf,
head of Icelandic Studies; Herbert Weil,
English; and Rosa Bruno-Jofre, of
Educational Administration and
Foundations.
They have been given 50 per cent
release time from teaching and depart-
mental duties by théir respective facul-
ties. Weil and Bruno-Jofre will have.
full-time fellowships for six months,
while Wolf will take a half-time fellow-
ship for 12 months.
Wolf, who received a U of M merit
award in 1992 and a 1993 Rh Award, is
widely published on Icelandic religious

saints.
Almost the same day Kirsten was
notified of her fellowship to complete a
critical edition of the classic Life of St.
Dorothy, she was advised that she had
received a $25,000 Social Sciences and
Humanities Research Council grant to
do three years of research on Old Norse
women saints as an interdisciplinary
study in medieval and women’s studies.
“I was veiy pleased about the fellow-
ship,” said Wolf. “Everything came
together for me — money and time.”
Weil, who was educated at Yale,
Tulane, Paris and Stanford, and is an
internationally recognized Shakes-
pearean scholar, will work toward the

Shakespeare.
Bruno-Jofre has collected data in the
archives of the Manitoba-founded
women’s religious order, the Missionaiy
Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart and
Maiy Immaculate, and conducted inter-
views with nuns recalling the early years
of the community. Her book will deal
with the bilingual order’s founding in
1904, the nuns’ efforts to build their
identity in deference to and indepen-
dent of Archbishop Langevin’s original
vision, conflicting interests of American,
Quebec and Manitoba perspectives on
community life, and three trends
(authoritarian, traditional and vision-
aiy) exemplifying different eras through-
out their histoiy until 1989.
