Bridge and Whist
luncheon successful

WINNIPEG, MB — The
Jón Sigurdsson Chapter IODE
held a very successful Lun-
cheon Bridge and Whist Party
at Betelstadur October 1.
Guests enjoyed a buffet
luncheon and played cards with
14 tables of bridge and five ta-
bles of whist. Door prizes were
given out during the aftemoon.
The home baking table was lad-
en with food, including a num-
ber of Icelandic specialties.
Winners at cards were,
alphabetically: Bridge: Vera
Bodo, Pearl Eyford, Norman
Kaisaris, Harry King, Rússell
McCreedy, Margaret McEl-
moyle, Roy Ogston, Joan
Thomsen and Loma Thorlak-
son. Whist: Gunnthora Gis-
ladottir, Shirley McCreedy,
Hrund Skulason, Doris Sulli-
van, and Dora Wonko.
The Chapter thanks all
those who attended and made
this event such a success. Its
Spring Luncheon Bridge and
Whist will be held in March,
2006, at which time we will
celebrate the ninetieth birthday
of the Jón Sigurdsson Chapter.

Icelandic for beginners

Hér og þar - Here and there
The adverb “there" in English is expressed in Icelandic by either par or
parna. Still, these two words do not have the exact same meaning.
Þarna is mainly used when people are pointing at something. Notice how
Helga says “Þarna er rautt hús”-. Here, she is pointing towards a red house.
Þar is used slightly differently. By using par, the speaker is referring back
in the conversation to a place or a space that has just been mentioned. Notice
Helga’s next utterance “Þar erpósthús.” Herz,par refers to the red house which
has already been mentioned.
The adverb “here” in English is expressed in Icelandic either by hér or hérna.
There is not a distinct difference between the two forms; they are interchange-
able. However, hérna is often used as a hesitation marker similar to the way am
is used in English:
Examples:
Ég, hérna, veitpab ekki. “I, um, don’t know.”
Hérna, hvað ertu að gera. “Um, what are you doing?”
