significantly improved transmission at an attractive price
together with scope for new office communication services.
An indication is given of the plans of British Telecom for the
introduction of digital plant in the United Kingdom and the
services which are expected to exploit its availability.
Reference will be made in particular to new services as teletex
aimed at improving office communications and to plans for an
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).
MR. D. W. F. MEDCRAFT, BRITISH TELECOM
Mr. Medcraft began his career with British Teleciom - The British
Post Office as it then was - as an engineer on the development
of transmission equipment for undersea coaxial cable systems.
In 1965 he moved into the data processing and data communications
areas of British Telecom headquarters activities, ar.d since then,
except for a break of two years in the early 1970s when he was
head of a section responsible for recruitment and selection of
university graduate entrants to the post office, he has been
involved in the planning and implementation of specialised data
network services, in particular packet switching. During the
latter part of that period he became head of The Digital Data
Network Division responsible for planning, development,
operation and maintenance of the national packet swiching and
digital leased line services - now known as BT s x stream
services. He was promoted to deputy director overseas liaison
and consultancy department in 1981.
He has presented invited papers at various international data
communications conferences in Canada, USA, Europe and the Middle
East. He has represented British Telecom at the Data Working
Group of The Conference of European PTT (CEPT) and has performed
