Summary of the annual report of the Icelandic Meteorological Offuce 1988
The Icelandic Meteorological Office was divided in to the following divisions: Admini-
stration, forecasting, computer, climatological, meteorological research, instrumental, geo-
physical, aviation observation and sea ice divisions. 61 personnel positions were occupied at
the end of the year.
The number of stations was as follows: 45 synoptic, 39 climatological and 37 precipitation
stations. At 5 of the stations agrometeorological observations were made, one summer station
was operated, 2 stations only for observations of wind, 2 for measurements of duration of
bright sunshine and 1 for agrometeorological observations.
Weather messages were sent from 59 Icelandic ships. Upper air observations were made at
Keflavík airport at 12 and 24 GMT. The total number of radiosonde observations (RAOB)
was 726 and wind observations (RAWIN) were 725. At the station írafoss samples were
collected for chemical analysis of some major pollutants in air and precipitation. Ozone
observations were made regularly at Reykjavík. Thirteen seismological stations were operat-
ed and 7 borehole strainmeter stations.
Weather reports and forecasts for Iceland and the surrounding sea banks were broadcast 9
times daily, and special voice broadcasts on short wave from coastal stations intended for
shipping 4 times daily. Forecasts for the deep sea banks were broadcast in Morse code in
Icelandic and English 4 times in 24 hours and forecasts for the banks were broadcast in English
4 times daily. Forecasts with a 48 and 72 hours validity period were issued daily. Weather maps
were presented daily by a meteorologist in the Icelandic Television.

The publication „Sea ice off the Icelandic coasts“ was issued for the period October 1987 —
September 1988.
