ABSTRACT
In July—August 1970 new grounds of Iceland
scallop (Chlamys islandica Miiller) were dis-
covered in Breiðafjörður, West Iceland, during
a scallop survey carried out there by the Marine
Research Institute. The survey showed the exis-
tence of a number of grounds in the midfjord
region of Breiðaf jörður, at mainly 15—30 fathoms
depth on sand, shell and gravel substrates (see
Figs. 1—3).
Approx. 5 min. dredgings yielded anything up
to 180 kgs of scallops, averaging 80—90 kgs per
haul in some areas. Average height of scallops
varied from 75—84 mm in samples taken in vari-
ous areas (Table 1 and Fig. 4).
During the last two years, surveys have shown
the existence of stocks of Iceland scallops in a
number of localities on the west and northwest
coasts of Iceland. Furthermore, there are good
hopes of new grounds being discovered elsewhere,
with the probable exception of the south coast.
