Valgerdur Goodman Magnusson
Born August 4th, 1881—Died March 12th, 1953
Valgerdur Magnusson, 624 Agnes
Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, died
on the 12th of March, 1953, follow-
ing a brief illness.
Vala as she was known to her
relatives and associates was born
on August 4th, 1881, in Iceland.
She came to Canada with her
parents in 1886 and Winnipeg was
their home from then on. Her
parents, Kristjan and Jona Good-
man, were well known in Winnipeg
for their hospitality and their ac-
tivities in the various projects in
the Icelandic community. They
were among the founders of the
Hecla Lodge of the I.O.G.T. and
were members of The First
Lutheran Church.
Vala married Skuli Magnusson in 1902. He died in 1910. Of their
six children only one survives his mother, Harald, residing in
Atikokan, Ontario. Three grand children and one great grandchild,
and two sisters; Nena, Mrs. D. R. McLeod, Selkirk, Manitoba; Lily,
Mrs. A. Bergman, Winnipeg. Four brothers: Harald, of Cleveland,
Ohio; Christian, Oliver, B.C.; Joe, Arcadia, California; and John
Winnipeg, Manitoba, also survive.
The funeral was held in the First Lutheran Church conducted
by Rev. V. J. Eylands. The large attendance was a tribute to Vala
for her steadfast and faithful adherence to the church, the Ladies
Aid and to Hecla Lodge. Her kind unassuming manner and quiet
dignity endeared Vala to her co-workers in these various projects.
