Johanna Stefania Stevens
Born December 20th, 1866—Died March 29th, 1953
Johanna Stefania Stevens was
born at Akureyri, Iceland, on
Dec. 20th, 1866, daughter of Hans
Jonsson and his wife Ingibjorg
Johannesdottir. She migrated to
Canada with her parents in the
year 1876. In 1887 she married
Capt. Jon Gudnason Stevens, who
predeceased her some years ago.
They made their home in Selkirk
but the greater part of their mar-
ried life was spent at Gimli and on
a farm in the Minerva district.
After her husbands death, she lived
in a lovely little home of her own
at Gimli. She died at the home of her son Clifford and his wife, on
March 29th, 1953. She is survived by one daughter and five sons,
thirty-two grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren
and two sisters.
The following are excerpts taken from the funeral sermon of
her pastor, Rev. H. S. Sigmar:
“In grandmother Stevens’ treasure box of memories she kept
this poem which meant much to her:
I hope when I am old and lone and useful days are o’er,
That I may have a little house with latch string at the door;
Where friends may come and visit me and talk of days of yore,
And I may sit and dream each day old memories o’er and o’er.
A little house to call my own, back from the shady street,
Where I may sit and watch the throng go by on hurrying feet;
A little house where I may dream till evening shadows fall,
And God will find me waiting to answer to lús call.
