Johanna Stefania Stevens — your beloved mother, grand-
mother and our dear good friend, God’s faithful child had lived out a
good life. Her days were marked with diligent, faithful toil, with the
bright flame of love. Her life went deep. Her experiences had been
profound and she had been touched by the serious issues of life.
But she always had the grace of good humour; she could laugh
through pain; she could smile troubles away; she was uplifted by
faith and optimism, and by the constructive, pioneer spirit. She
had accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour and she never
let Him down. She served His cause in home, community and
church. He had become a part of her life so that she might well
have said with St. Paul, “Nevertheless I live, yet not I but Christ
liveth in me.” She was a friend to all who wanted her friendship,
and yet there was a regal dignity about her. She bore herself in
a queenly fashion, befitting her conviction that she was a member
of the Royal Family of the children of the King of Kings,
The evening shadows had fallen and God found her waiting
to answer His last call. It was on Palm Sunday. It was a fitting day
for her to answer the call of Heaven’s King, for Palm Sunday is
the first day of Holy Week, the prelude to the great Festival of
Easter. And as the Angel of death made his appearance these words
from the past re-echoed in the room.
‘Twilight and evening hell,
And after that the dark.’
‘I hope to meet my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the har’
