Reykjavík Grapevine - 15.08.2008, Qupperneq 42
B2 | The Reykjavík Grapevine | Issue 12 2008 Listings Gus Gus burst into Nasa on August 16 with their elective mix of Techno and Electronica. Known for being the one of the biggest dance electronic acts in the world, Gus Gus are working on their 6th studio album and are now testing new material at Iceland’s greatest dance venue. Founded in 1995, Forever, their 5th studio album, reached critical ac- claim and Gus Gus’s new work gained momentum exploring the rivers of elec- tronica through their dancey, ethereal tunes and sexy vocal samples. For mu- sic that has, in their own words, been ‘scientifically grooved and tailored to hit where it hurts – the heart – Gus Gus’s two main ‘Taylors’ President Bongo and Biggi Veira must be sharpening their needles for this – the ultimate ‘sneak peak’ in Soul couture. His photos are showing now and through the 21st of August at the boutique and art gallery Figura located in downtown Reykjavik. The exhibition consists of two works with three photos each focusing on the themes of transparency and symmetry as the title might suggest. This is Leo’s first exhibition of his work. For his first show he is doing very well. “It’s going ahead of my expecta- tions,” he said. “People have been very interested.” He has already sold a few photos and has some potential buyers lined up. “I’m very grateful for that,” he remarked. Leo has been working as a photog- rapher for two years now mostly doing work for newspapers and local venues as well as working on his own pho- tography. He is getting ready to begin school at the Icelandic Academy for the Arts soon. The house started in 1968 as a cultural centre and has remained a strong resource for all things Nordic. It offers an impressive two-story library, art exhibits, lectures, concerts and workshops. The centre is planning to celebrate its anniversary by presenting exhibitions that celebrate each decade of Nordic culture through art, history, and design. The first of these exhibits will be held on the 22nd of August and highlight the year 1968 using designs by the centre’s chief architect Alvar Aalto. The exhibits will then focus on 1978, 1988, and so forth extending on into 2018 and a look into the future for Nordic culture. Ellen Fodstad, the centre’s project manager, encourages visitors and locals alike to take part in the festivities which, complete with wine and food, promise to be entertaining as well as educational. “The ultimate goal,” she says, “is to make the house come alive and it doesn’t come alive without people.” When: August 22 – 31 Where: The Nordic House, Sturlugata 5, 101 Reykjavík Art sYmmetrY Photo exhibition Art nordic house’s 40th 2 F7 3 C11 1 E6
