Sponsors authorized to hand carry
their dependents’ medical records
The Navy has announced a new policy that should relieve some of
its problems as well as make one aspect of transferring a little
easier for Navymen.
Dependents' sponsors are now authorized to hand carry their
families' medical records from one
duty to another when transferred.
The Navy is also conducting a
limited pilot program to allow
the dependents themselves to hand
carry these records.
This policy has replaced a
long-standing practice of having
the new duty station request de-
pendents' medical records from
the old command once the move has
been made.
Experience in the past has
shown that in the old way, depen-
dents' medical records have been
"lost", thereby making it neces-
sary to open new records at the
new duty stations. Many depen-
dents have experienced this in-
convenience each time their spon-
sors move.
The Navy feels that the depen-
dents can take care of their own
medical records easier than its
people can, and the new practice
is hoped to alleviate many of the
difficulties connected with de-
pendents' records.
In line with the Navy's pro-
gram to make handling of depen-
dent medical records easier, the
Navy has also instituted a new
filing system for outpatient re-
cords. These records are now in
the process of conversion to the
new system here, and the standard
practice should be Navy-wide
shortly.
Military men have been able to
hand carry their own health re-
cords along with service records
when they travel.
