Independence Day Celebrated here Monday

Rain threatened earlier in the
day, but the weather cleared and
the Naval Station's big Indepen-
dence Day activities program got
underway.
People of all ages were having
a good time as the first event
started with kite flying, as Bet-
ty Donlinger had her kite flying
high, a little higher than se-
cond place Donnie Duncan. Things
got smaller as the Rabbit Race
started for 5—year-olds and un-
der. Winners of this event were
Brian Bealieu in first, and Lenny
Helms in second place.
Next, the backward race for
children,ages 6 and 7, got under-
way with James Lee takings steady
first, and Alison Hyman a close
second.
Things up-ended for the wheel-
barrow race as Mike Myers and
Aaron Harris hand-legged across
the finish line with Mike Drury
and Don Duncan close behind.

Hopping along with the hopping race for the
"rested" 5-year-olds and under, Lenny Helms jumped
across the finish line ahead of second-place fin-
isher, Jennifer Harris.
The boys caught their breaths while the girls
started with age group 6 and 7, and scrambled for
shoes, and with quite a mix-up. Julie Cummings
won the event, and coming in second place was Emi-
lie Helms. The older girls got into the act also
as Karen Payne, a steady scrambler, pulled out to
win, with Karen Burr right on her heels.
With the hens laying more and more eggs, you
might know the next event would be the egg toss.
In the mixed league, ages 8-11, Greg Love must
have used a hard-boiled egg as he and his partner
Ray Rice, won the event. Smashing the egg, but
still finishing in second place was Jenny Pearce
and Karen Payne. In the older age bracket, 12-15-
yeai>-olds, Robert Drury and Ray Rice had the
steadiest hands, taking first place, while chal-
lenging in second was Bill Bruss and Kevin Cum-
mings. Tom Ferguson and his wife Linda babied the
married couples to win, as Bob and Sheri Seifest
weren't quite as gentle but steadied themselves e-
nough to take second place. Gerald and Mouse Dun-
can won the "any combination", age 16 and over,
toss, as James Burt and partner Clay Bucholz held
together long enough to take second place. Ray
and Dorothy Wyskup edged Tom and Linda Ferguson to
win the male and female class.
The ringer tournament, which consisted of ten
throws with horseshoes, at the stake was taken by
Bill Anderson with two ringers. Second placgj
went to Robert Arace with a single ringer. I
