State primary elections begin soon
State prlmarv elections are
coming up very soon. Following is
a schedule of state primary elec-
tions which will occur in the next
three months: March 18 Illinois,
April 22 Pennsylvania, and in May
are: Texas, District of Columbia,
Indiana, Maryland, Nebraska, Ore-
gon, Puerto Rico, Arkansas, Idaho,
and Kentucky primaries.
The Federal Voting Assistance
Office (FVAO) allows overseas per-
sonnel to register to vote in
their home state and receive ab-
sentee ballots by filling out an
application which is in postcard
form. The FVAO has issued a new
Federal Postcard Application form
and these new forms should be a-
vailable in the Legal Office,
Bldg. T-170, in about two months.
But the old forms are available
and are still good to be used.
However, a few states treat the
older form only as a request for
state registration forms and will
send separate documents to be sub-
mitted as a request for a ballot.
Plan ahead and submit your ap-
plication for a ballot or to reg-
ister early. Use your vote; don't
lose it. See your Departmental
Voting Assistance Officer or the
Naval Station Legal Office.
USO to celebrate
peanut month
March will be National Peanut
Month, and the USO will celebrate
with an exhibition of "Peanuts and
Goobers in Art". Starving Artists
and artists are invited to create,
"for peanuts", a work of art using
peanuts in any form as a medium.
Peanut sculpture, peanut col-
lages, goober jewelry, peanut por-
traits, peanut brittle boutique
items, peanut butter finger paint-
ing and peanut puppets are a few
suggested art forms to be explored
during the Keflavik USO Goober-
philic Art Exhibition.
Fred peanuts for art's sake,
donated by the National Peanut
Council of America, are available
from Pat Lockwood at the USO.
Foster receives
surprise award
Gunners Mate Technical First
Class Harry E. Foster was awarded
the Navy Achievement Thursday, Feb-
ruary 14, in a surprise ceremony by
Captain Thomas J. Keene, commanding
officer of the Naval Station.
GMT1 Foster earned the award for
"professional achievement in the
superior performance of his duties
while serving as Leading Petty Of-
ficer of the CMAA/Detention Facility
of the U.S. Naval Station from 1
November through 31 December 1979."
The citation accompanying the a-
ward praised his performance.
"Petty Officer Foster supervised
the processing of more than 24 per-
sonnel in a disciplinary status, and
he functioned as a baliff for sever-
al Air Force and Navy court-mar-
tials, trained nine Air Force secur-
ity personnel to function as guards
at the Detention Facility, escorted
six of the confined personnel to the
Correctional Center in Philadelphia
and continued to perform all duties
of the Leading Petty Officer."
He was further praised "continu-
ing to maintain such high standards
of performance and supervision" that
the Chief of Naval Personnel's In-
spector of Detention Facilities i-
dentified the Keflavik Detention
Facility "as the best of its type
within the Navy organization."
GMT1 Foster arrived in Keflavik
in April 1977 and is scheduled to go
to recruiting duty in St. Louis in
April.
M iss Black America
arrives March 1
A DOD/USO "Miss Black America
Show" will be aboard the NATO base
area Mar.n 1-5. Miss Black America,
Varetta Shankle of Mississippi, and
three atate winners will combine
their special talents for a soul and
disco musical along with dance num-
bers.
Their performance schedule will
be: They will make a personal ap-
pearance at the A. T. Mahan High
School on Sunday, March 2 at noon,
which will be hosted by The Afro A-
merican Unity Club. Also a perform-
ance on Sunday, March 2, at 6 p.m.
in the Andrews Theater; on Monday,
March 3, 7 p.m. at Rockville; on
Tuesday, March 4, 11 a.m. at Grinda-
vik; and a performance on Tuesday,
March 4, 8 p.m. at the USO.
