Burke wins table tennis titles
A two-day Table Tennis Tournament was held at the
USO over the Labor Day weekend with Jim Dutton and
Alan Burke winning the doubles title, and facing
each other for the singles crown.
Doubles competition was played Sunday and six tan-
dem vied for the top spot. USO Table Tennis Defen-
ding Champion Dutton and his partner Burke were the
top twosome and they nosed out the second place team
of Allen Provart and Mike Garcia. Drew Varland and
Mark Beauchamp finished in third place, while other
top teams were A1 Grenier and John Schumann, Lori and
Jim Richeson and Ivan McCulley and Tom Boyd.
On Monday night the singles entrants and the former
doubles team players all became opponents through
double elimination matches, two out of three. As
players were eliminated one by one, it became obvioi
that the final match would be between the previous
day's winning teammates, Dutton and Burke.
In a tight, grueling, three out of five finals
match, Burke upset the defending champion Dutton for
first place. Third and fourth place went to Allen
Provart and Mike Garcia, who finished second in
doubles competition as a team. Other top finishers
were Carlos Colon, A1 Grenier, Dave Judy, Marty
Jankoviak, Terry Grenier, John Schumann and Ron Baize.
The USO will hold another series of tournaments
next month at a date and time to be announced in the
White Falcon.

Kwoba & Tiso lead NEX over VP-46,
60-57, for Summer basketball title
The Navy Exchange Basketball
Team (NEX), behind strong perfor-
mances by Bill Kowba and John Tiso,
defeated VP-46, 60-57 Wednesday
night and clinched first place in
the Summer Basketball League, de-
spite Bill Konrad's 28 points for
VP-46.
NEX and VP-46 were tied with
identical 13-2 records after the
regular season ended and the extra
game was played to break that dead-
lock for the first place crown.
The NEX squad nearly gave the
game away in the closing minutes of

the game as the persistant VP-46
players whittled away NEX's 10 point
lead. NEX held a 50-40 lead with
5:57 to go and seemingly had the
game in the bag.
That was not the case, however,
as VP-46 outscored NEX 17-8 in the
next five minutes and 40 seconds of
play and were down 58-57 with only
17 seconds remaining. Konrad led
the VP-46 come-from-behind effort
with 13 points, nine of which came
from the free throw line.
But that's as close as the squad-
ron team was to get, as they missed
three opportunities to score in the
final seconds of the game. NEX's
Mike Banks ended the scoring with
eight seconds to play and gave his
team a 60-57 victory and sole pos-
session of first place.
The near capacity crowd at the
Base Gym saw a fierce battle in the
first half of play as the lead
changed hands five times. NEX
built up a little breathing room
and held a five point lead at the
intermission. Kowba, Tiso and Arni
Larusson were the big guns for NEX
in the first 15 minutes of play with
10, 11 and eight points respec-
tively. Konrad and Charles Jones
kept the Patrol Squadron close with
a total of 21 points.
Konrad led all scorers with 28
points while his teammate Jones
added 10. NEX was paced by Kwoba
and Tiso with 14 points apiece and
Larusson and Jim Acree pitched in
with 10 and eight points respec-
tively.
A total of 47 fouls were called
by referees Pete Bell and Rex Dial,
who also assessed two technical
fouls.
