★ Here's how the NFL teams fared in the first week of
the regular season. Pittsburgh defeated Houston 31-17;
Buffalo gowned Miami 17-7; New England outscored Cleveland
34-17; Tampa Bay got by Cincinnati 17-12; Minnesota slipped
past Atlanta 24-23; San Francisco edged New Orleans 26-23; The New York
Giants trounced St. Louis 41-35; Green Bay defeated Chicago 12-6 in over-
time; Philadelphia handled Denver 27-6; Detroit beat Los Angeles 41-20;
Oakland bested Kansas City 27-17; San Diego downed Seattle 34-13; and
Baltimore won over the New York Jets 17-14.
★TENNIS—John McEnroe is the U.S. Open Champion for the second year in a
row. He outlasted the man who defeated him at Wimbledon, Bjorn Borg,
7-6, 6-1, 6-7, 5-7 and 6-4, to capture Sunday's final of the event held in
New York. Borg's main problem appeared to be his serve. He committed
nine double faults, and fewer than half of his serves were in. BILLIE
JEAN KING and MARTINA NAVRATILOVA teamed to win the U.S. Open's Women's
doubles championship. WENDY TURNBULL and Marty RIESSEN captured the mixed
doubles title.
★AUTO RACING—Bobby Allison pulled away from Richard Petty Sunday to win
his second consecutive capital city 400 Nascar Grand National Race at
Richmond, Virginia. Allison, driving his familiar blue-and-white Ford
Thunderbird, gained the lead when he passed Benny Parsons in the 272nd
lap. Petty finished second and Lennie Pond finished in third place.
★GOLF—Wayne Levi shot a par-five on the fourth playoff hole Sunday to
win the $300,000 Pleasant Valley Classic at Sutton, Massachusetts. Levi
capped a spectacular two-days of golf to oust Gil Morgan and earn the
$54,000 first prize. Both Levi and Morgan finished the regulation 72-
holes in 273—11 under par. Levi forced the playoff with a five-under-par
66 Sunday, after shooting a 65 on Saturday. SANDRA SPUZICH earned her
first LPGA victory in three years when she shot a four-under par 212 Sun-
day to capture the $100,000 dollar tournament at Plymouth, Indiana.
Second place went to Lori Garbacz and Carolyn Hill who finished two-
strokes back of Spusich.
★ THEY SAID IT—DANA KIRK, Memphis State Basketball Coach, who provided
the TV commentary for a game in which Les Henson's 89-foot desperation
shot at the buzzer gave Virginia Tech a 79-77 victory over Florida State:
"Quite frankly, I thought he took a bad shot."
