A very important thing to re-
member is to always thoroughly
wash your hands with soap and
hot water after handling cats,
feces, dirt and raw meats. Be
sure to seek veterinary care for
your animal when it appears ill.

Women smokers have lower fertility
Women who wish to become pregnant have a better
chance of conceiving if they stop smoking cigar-
ettes, according to an article in the Journal of
the American Medical Association.
Researchers at the National Institute of En-
vironmental Health Sciences conducted a study to
find out if smoking reduces fertility. Informa-
tion about smoking histories and how long it took
each woman to conceive were collected on 678
pregnant women.
"Fertility of smokers was estimated to be 72
percent of the fertility of nonsmokers," the
study reported.
The researchers also determined that the amount
of smoking made a difference. "Heavy smokers
(those women who smoked more than 20 cigarettes a
day) experienced lower fertility than did light
smokers (57 percent and 75 percent of the preg-
nancy rate of nonsmokers, respectively)."
The study showed that fertility was no affect-
ed by husbands'smoking.
