“I suddenly realised that in high school I once only got
a B in Icelandic instead of an A, and that was in the
course where we read the Eddic poetry and Njáls saga.
Now I travel around the world telling people about this
very same literature and people are buying tickets to
listen to me. I found it rather funny and ironic.”
Gerður Kristný, who was recently named Inter-
national Writer-In-Residence at the University
of Iowa’s prestigious writing programme,
provides hope for all of us aspiring Nobel Prize
biochemists who couldn’t quite scrounge up that
B+ in high school.

The cause of the simultaneously shattered
coffee mugs around the country? Iceland had
been featured in an American movie…but not
in a good way. What film could have painted
Iceland so poorly as to have been described as
“absurd” and “stupid”? We take a look back to

good, then it's working. If gay people are shocked, good,
