Mediathon 87
$82,370 raised

What do a 1987 Suzuki, volleyball and a walk-a-
thon have in common? They were all part of the
1987 Navy Relief and Air Force Aid fund drives
conducted on the NATO Base.
This year’s drives raised a total of $67,250 for
Navy Relief and $15,120 for Air Force Aid.
There were several different events that gave
people on the Naval Air Station a chance to get
involved in raising money. The two biggest were a
raffle and Mediathon '87.
Grand prize in this year's raffle was a 1987
Suzuki 410 four-wheel drive vehicle, which was won
by Airman Glen Martin of Patrol Squadron 23.
Second and third prizes, respectively, were a 25
Inch color television, won by Lt. Larry Brewster of
the Naval Communications Station, and a Canon AE1
camera, won by Storekeeper 3rd Class Kathy
Gilchrist of NAS Supply.
The most visible part of the fund raising cam-
paign was Mediathon ‘87. Like its predecessor,
Radiothon, Mediathon was the project of Navy
Broadcasting Service, Detachment Keflavik (NBS).
According to Senior Chief Journalist Marc Dyer, NBS
Col. Tommy Almquist, Capt. John R. Fiol,
RADM Eric McVadon and Lt. Lance Krzywicki
take over as newscasters during Mediathon
‘37 (H»<* H PHAN Matthew Grafiaziaae).
has been sponsoring these week-long ’thons’ for ‘at
least the last ten years, maybe longer.”
Mediathon Is not unique to Keflavik. According to
Dyer, every NBS detachment all over the world does
its own version of Mediathon to help raise money
for Navy Relief, and some of the Air Force broad-
casting units do their own version to raise money
for Air Force Aid. It’s a week of craziness that
helps Navy and Air Force people all over the world.
Navy finance changes delivery of alloments
by J02 Carolyn Briscoe
Navy Editors Service
The Navy's forwarding of allotments has
changed, and the change will affect military
members.
The change that took effect March 17, 1987,
involves using Direct Deposit System (DDS) instead
of hardcopy treasury checks for monthly delivery
of Savings (S) and Dependent (D) allotments to
financial Institutions. This means that all such
transactions will be deposited electronically via
DDS. Dependent allotments to individual payee’s
address will remain unchanged.
The change in procedures began for new starts
and changed with the first payday in May 1987. This
is how it works:
When you visit your disbursing office to arrange
to have funds forwarded each month to an account
in a financial institution, you must complete the
payee portion of Direct Deposit Standard Form
1199A (SF-1199A) and ensure that a representative
of the financial institution completes the
appropriate section.
The financial institution must provide a routing
transit number (RTN) and all validated account
information on the SF-1199A, so payment can be
electronically deposited to the proper account.
Forms are available at financial institutions or your
disbursing office.
The Navy Finance Center will be automatically
converting to DDS ”S” and ”D” allotments that were
started before the change was implemented. The
conversion to DDS will be accomplished in six
segments over a 15-month period. After full
conversion in July 1988, allotments that cannot be
converted — those without validated RTNs — will be
investigated as to their legality. Unauthorized
allotments will be stopped.
