Defense Force supports
Secretary of State visit
by J02 Chiquita L. Land
Staff Reporter
While the world was watching the economic
summit in Venice, another important conference
took place in Reykjavik. The NATO minister's
conference.
Secretary of State George Shultz represented the
United States at the NATO meetings. While he was
in Iceland, several units of the Defense Force
helped make his visit go smoothly.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit supported
the visit by searching for bombs everywhere the
Secretary went for the three days of the
conference.
The Naval Investigative Service met Mr. Shultz's
aircraft when it arrived, and coordinated things
between the Secret Service, the State Department,
the American Embassy, the Icelandic Police and the
military security forces here on the base.
The 4557th Security Police Squadron augmented
the Air Force security police that came with Mr.
Shultz by providing a mobile patrol unit to help with
the security of the American and other NATO
minister's aircraft.
The 960th AWACS housed Mr. Shultz's plane in
Hangar 885 and provided stand-by maintenance
service. The Air Operations Department parked the
planes of the other NATO ministers, including the

West German's, Italians, British, Portugese and the
Canadian planes.
Though the NATO Conference may have been over-
shadowed by the Venice summit, the Defense Force
made an important contribution to the success of
the NATO Alliance.
USO holding spruce up' contest this month
The USO is sponsoring a "Spruce Up!" the
community during the month of June. Spruce Up is
an effort to generate "civic pride" among the
residents of our community. Though all of us may
spend only a small portion of our lives here in
Keflavik, there are hundreds of others who will live
here long after we're gone.
It is easy to look around and moan about how
"moon-like" the base is. This is your opportunity to
do something constructive about it. This contest is
your chance to positively influence your
environment.
During the month of June, any group of 12 or less
may register. You may beautify the area you choose
with flowers, small trees, rock gardens, etc. Be
creative! The primary focus of your attention
should be the housing areas, though other buildings
may be done with the approval of the Public Works
Department.
Your "project" must be completed by Friday, July
3. Entries will be judged and winners will be
announced at the USO's 4th of July celebration. The
winners will be judged on creativity, aesthetic
value, and potential for long-term endurance.
First prize will be tickets to the Gourmet Dinner at
the O'Club in July.
Supplies to complete your project - flowers,
plants, small trees, etc. may be purchased both in
Keflavik and Reykjavik. Stops at these places will
be included during USO shopping trips during the
month of June. Soil may be obtained through the
Housing Office.
Don't be discouraged! Flowers and trees do grow
on this island. Drive through housing, by the
chapel, past the elementary school. It takes so
little to make a big difference.
