Danish woman

After the pickup the hele climbed above the
clouds to refuel from the waiting HC-130 tanker that
also deployed to the rescue point. After refueling
the HH-3 flew to the Reykjavik airport where a
waiting ambulance transported the Danish woman to
a maternity hospital.

Saturday, June 20, Det. 14 received a call at
2:45 p.m. relayed from Greenland asking for help
for a 29-year-old Danish woman who needed to be
evacuated from a Danish ship, due to maternity
problems.
According to the HH-3 'Jolly Green Giant'
helicopter copilot, 1st Lt. Alex Weinstein the helo
was 'scrambled in minimum time.'
His Danish Majesty's Ship (HDMS) Besyttern was
located 200 miles northwest of Iceland, about half-
way to Greenland. The weather was good on takeoff
but deteriorated on the way out. The ceiling was
down to 300 feet according to Weinstein. A hole in
the fog and clouds at the ship's location enabled the
pararescuemen Staff Sgt. Joseph O’Neil and Master
Air Force Capt. Allen Goard was the search and
rescue mission coordinator during the Defense
Force rescue effort. He acted as the focal point for
all the agencies involved, coordinating information
between the Defense Force, the Icelandic Lifesaving
Association and the Icelandic Coast Guard.
Helo crew members were: aircraft commander
Capt. Gil Armour, copilot 1st Lt. Alex Weinstein,
flight engineer Master Sgt. Larry Tomb and the
pararescumen as mentioned above.
Maintenance crew for the helo were: Staff Sgt.
Dale Chichocke, Sgt. Mark Galatis, Tech Sgt. Bob
Murtha and Sgt. Jeffrey Kyle.
