Softball highlights
The 932nd ROCKVILLE team
has blazed Its way Into first place
in the Intramural Softball A-
League in action through June 22.
They pounded previously unbeaten
VP-23-E 11-5 Saturday to up
their record to 6-1. However,
they have a number of teams
waiting to snatch first place
should they stumble.
Leading that group is the
4557th SUPPLY. This team
showed signs of being a contender
by finishing third in the pre-
season tournament. Since then
they have raced to a 7-2 regular
season start. Last Thursday
against AIR OPS, they exploded
for eight runs in the second in-
ning, and went on to blast their
opponents 13—5. Saturday they
were at it again against NCS-A.
Led by veteran Jim Wiley and a
group of youthful power hitters
such as Karl Adebahr, Randy
Reiper and Phil Nieto, they
outlasted NCS-A 10-7.
There are other A-League
squads that have had impressive
starts including 6-2 NAS SUPPLY
and the 57TH FIS ( 1) at 6-3.
In the B-League, the CRYPT-
DOCS continue to hold first place
with a 7-0 mark. Last Wednes-
day, they blasted NCS GRINDAVIK
17-1 to continue their unbeaten
season. They have company at the
top of the heap as PSD has raced
to an 8-1 start. Wednesday they
defeated the NATO WOMEN 21-6
and then ended their week Sat-
urday with a 27-1 blasting of NCS
GRINDAVIK. Mike Anderson and
Howie Seeley are two of the
wheels that propel this machine
which should be in the B-League
pennant race right down to the
wire.
The young season has produced
its share of surprising teams
such as the 960th AWACS. They
are alone in third place at 7-1.
June 15, they pounded NCS
GRINDAVIK 16-5. Saturday was
their biggest test yet against 5-3
NAVFAC. Neither team could gain
a big lead and with time expiring
it came down to the bottom of the
sixth inning with AWACS up to bat
with the score tied 12-12. With
one out Randy Woody walked. Up
came Robert Mitchell who
delivered a single sending Woody
to third. But the throw to third
was wide enabling Woody to score
the winning run for the 13-12
AWACS win.
Behind the AWACS stands the
MARINES at 5-2. In their only
game of the week they bombarded
0-7 NAS SECURITY 11-3.

Air Force increases female
weight standards
Air Forces News Service
Randolph AFB, Texas
Air Force women will be al-
lowed to weigh more according to
the findings of an Air Force
weight standards work group.
This decision came after the
working group, commissioned by
the Secretary of the Air Force,
completed its review of research
on body composition and weight
standards. The working group
was chaired by the deputy direc-
tor of personnel plans, head-
quarters Air Force.
The working group's charter
was to ensure the current weight
standards were fair, logical and
defensible, according to a news
release from the Air Force Mili-
tary Personnel Center. The group
reviewed civilian and military re-
search, considered input from
the Air Force Fitness Advisory
Council and conducted an evalua-
tion of personal appearance.
‘The working group reviewed
the most recent body composition
research, and conducted panels
to evaluate professional military
appearance,' said Senior Master
Sgt. Jim Wingate, chief of quality
force management at the person-
nel center.
The male standard is a per-
formance related standard based
on research of more than 30,000
Air Force trainees. The male
standard was increased four per-
cent in T981 and represented a
similar increase by the Metropo-
litan Life Insurance Company in
1983. The female weight standard
was also increased four percent
in 1981; however, the 1983 Metro
Life Insurance Co. increase for
women was eight percent.
Personal appearance panels
were conducted to evaluate pro-
fessional military appearance.
The panel's ratings validated the
male's weight standard as meet-
ing acceptable appearance. How-
ever, females who were above
the current standard on an ave-
rage of seven pounds were also
rated as meeting standards.
The body composition research
and the personal appearance
panel results verified the need to
increase the female standard six
to nine pounds, about five
percent, depending on height.
