Curated by acclaimed pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, the Midsummer
Music Festival is billed as a “Playground of Ideas”—and with
over ten highly varied acts, there’ll be no shortage of ideas
here. Perhaps the most innovative features of the festival are its
three “Grey Area” events—late-night improvisations by assorted
artists, inspired by Frederic Chopin’s “grey hours.” As well as
these poetically moody jam sessions, there’ll be impressionist
gypsy sonatas with Hallelujah Junction, musical interpretations
of Dante’s “Inferno,” and animal songs. Come and check out
this unique festival that’s sure to cement Iceland’s place on the
classical music map. CMD

It’s been 100 years since women’s suffrage in Iceland, but the
country still has a long way to go. Did you know that Icelandic
female composers receive less than 10% of the country’s
royalties? Ten percent! In order to showcase the extraordinary
talent of Icelandic female composers, Harpa is hosting Author
Unknown. Featuring tunes composed by female artists like Björk,
Hafdís Huld and Emilíana Torrini, with an all-male cast of
performers, this gender-role-reversal-concert is bound to be a
night to remember. To top it all off, punk performers Ragga Gísla
(of Grýlurnar fame), Dúkkulísurnar and Kolrassa Krókríðandi
will rock out the finale. HJC
