Steampunk Iceland
Looking for a new country? The Kingdom of Bildalia will be opening up its doors for immigration on
June 20. Artist Ingimar Oddsson created the fictional world—which has its own borders, national
flag, armed forces and royalty—in the southern region of the Westfjords, and this unique Kingdom
will set the stage for the Steampunk Iceland festival, which runs until June 27. With concerts,
shows, masquerades, and even a royal wedding, this is definitely the time to get out of not only
Reykjavík, but this century. Break out your goggles, gears, and blimps—it’s time to party like it’s

Akureyri Art Museum
‘Endurvarp’ by Mireya Samper
This exhibit shows both two- and
three-dimensional works by Samper,
exploring the cosmos, infinity,
eternity, repetition and patterns. The
installation also has a "meditation
space," where visitors can sit, lie down
and reflect. Japanese performance
artist Kana Nakamura will also be
participating in the show.

‘RÓT’ ("ROOT")
This project involves multiple artists of
varying disciplines getting together,
brainstorming, and creating a work of
art together in order to explore what
collaborative and unplanned effort
might lead to.

Aviation Festival
During the Aviation Day, visitors are
offered the opportunity to view new
and old aircrafts of many kinds and
even see some of them in action. This
is a perfect opportunity for families to
have a good time and enjoy a day out
during the middle of summer.

This installation by Margrét Jónsdóttir
aims to honor Vilhelmína Lever, who
pushed for women’s suffrage in
Iceland, participating in municipal
elections in the 1800s, before women
were legally allowed to vote.

Prins Póló
Fiercely independent DIY artist Prins
Póló (who we picked as the 2014 artist
of the year) is touring around North
Iceland and plays a show at Græni
Hatturinn.

'Karlar fyrir konur' (Men for Women)
Finnish pianist Roope Gröndahl and
Icelandic violinist Ari Þór Vilhjálmsson,
both renowned musicians, will be
performing music from composers
including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,
Béla Bartók, Claude Debussy, and Lili
Boulanger.

and folk musician, KK, is joined by
Þorleifur Guðjónsson and Kormákur
Geirharðsson for a folktastic night.

NEC Youth Philharmonic Orchestra
The highly selective New England
Conservatory Youth Philharmonic
Orchestra, which consists of 90
talented musicians aged 14 to
18, will be performing pieces by
several composers, including Ernest
Chausson and Nikolai Andreyevich
Rimsky-Korsakov. The performance
will be part of the YPO’s biannual
international tour.

'Maddama, kerling, fröken, fro' by
ÁLFkonur
ÁLFkonur is a group of female
photographers living and working
in Akureyri and Eyjafjörður. This
show features photos from fifteen of
the club's members, and it focuses
on topics relating to the centennial
anniversary of women's suffrage. The
exhibit will be held at the Akureyri
botanical gardens, located outside
Cafe Laut.

‘Hidden Forest’ by Driftwood Design
This exhibit will feature the works of 25
different artists, all of which focus on
driftwood and its perhaps untapped
potential for practical and artistic use.

‘Smother Nature’ by Susan Mabin
Susan exclusively uses scavenged ma-
terials in her work, and in this exhibit,
she’s specifically working with gar-
bage from Northern Iceland. Through
her sculpture show, she hopes to
raise awareness on the multitude of
environmental problems caused by
excessive trash.

Drangey Music Festival
This outdoor festival in the north of
Iceland will include sets from Icelandic
performers including singers Emilíana
Torrini, Jónas Sigurðsson, and blues
band Contalgen Funeral. The festival
will take place outdoors in the beauti-
ful, smoky environment of Reykir, and
the music will play on into the morning
as the sun rises higher.

Folk Music on Siglufirð
This annual folk music festival aims to
bring together musicians, dancers,
and artists from a diverse array of
backgrounds and ethnicities. There
will also be lectures on foreign folk

Spákonuhof
The first named inhabitant of
Skagaströnd was Þórdís the seer, who
lived there in the beginning of the 10th
century, and in this exhibit her life, or
at least what we know of it, will be on
display all summer. Guests can also
have their fortunes told or palms read
by locals, and children can plunder
Þórdís's gold chest for treasure. The
exhibit is open Tuesdays to Sundays
from 13:00 to 18:00.

The dark and gloomy pop star sóley, is
performing a live show. Expect piano-
driven melodies, underpinned by low-
key rhytms, and dark gothic themes.

Egilstaðir Jazz Festival
Held in the Austurlands since 1988,
JEA boasts the title of being the oldest
jazz festival in Iceland. Peforming this
year will include solo guitarist Björn
Thoroddsen, the soulful group Beebee
and the Bluebirds, and the jazzy Jack
Magnet Quintet, among others.

Skaftfell Center for Visual Art
‘Real Life’
This exhibition features biographical
films about people who are larger
than life. This includes an Icelandic
artist, a Swiss ski jumper, a Swed-
ish polar explorer, and a Norwegian
philosopher. Their stories are told from
a very unique, and at times peculiar,
perspective.

Stöðvarfjörður
Petra's Stone Collection
In the small fjord of Stöðvarfjörður
there is a collection of rare rocks and
minerals, most of which have been col-
lected by Petra Sveinsdóttir from the
surrounding area. Her wonder world
of stones is now reputedly the world's
largest private collection of rocks. Avid
stone collector as she may be, her
collection also extends to other things,
including pens, cups, sea shells, and
all sorts of small items.

include music from artists including
Mannakorn and Magnús and Jóhann,
as well as art exhibitions, swimming,
golf, and, of course, a sorcerer.

'Melodic Objects'
Six jugglers and one musician col-
laborate on a presentation of live visual
music. ensemble object manipulation
is led by jay gilligan, who is a profes-
sional juggler based in Stockholm,
Sweden. jay is the author of an
extremely popular TEDx talk about
the history of juggling rings, and will
direct a graphical representation of the
music on stage.

‘HERO’ by Bárður Snæfellsás
HERO is a critically acclaimed one
man comedy based on the local saga
of Bárður Snæfellsás, the first settler
of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. During
the show, the actor takes on the
roles of dozens of trolls, giants and
heroes, whilst sending the audience
on a rollercoaster ride of laughter and
countless surprises.

the Freezer Hostel—a perfect location

listen to recordings of people talking
about the weather and how it has
