Forréttabarinn
Forréttabarinn literally means “the bar of
starters.” It is situated close to the harbour in
an abandoned warehouse of some sort. The
decor is rugged, yet stylish: spacious with
high ceilings and big windows. Similar to
the tapas approach to dining, the restaurant
serves small simple courses with few, but well
chosen, ingredients.
Nýlendugata 14
Stofan
Voted the best place to read a book in the
Grapevine Best of Reykjavík awards (2012,
2013 and 2015), this old-timey coffee house
is something straight out of a Carl Larsson
painting. A perfect place to spend the day
sitting on their antique furniture and sip-
ping delicious drinks, both alcoholic and
otherwise.

Places We Like
Although some claim service at Ban Thai can
be lacking at times, most have no complaints
about the food (indeed, we dubbed it Reyk-
javík’s “best Thai restaurant” in our annual
BEST OF issue last year). One of the few Thai
restaurants in Iceland, Ban Thai gives the
diner a unique experience in both atmosphere
and cuisine.

Apótek Restaurant
This restaurant is cosy and stylish with
friendly staff and a South American-infused
menu. The name joyfully refers to the fact that
the building used to house a pharmacy in
days past, and the cocktail menu reflects this,
split up into painkillers, stimulants, tranquilliz-
ers and placebos.

Hraðlestin
Despite being the faster and more afford-
able cousin to one of the top restaurants in
the country, Austurindíafélagið, flavour is
never compromised by promptness. Their
short selection of authentic Indian cuisine is
cooked with the finest ingredients, the spices
are masterfully blended and the experience is
wholly satisfying.

Icelandic Fish & Chips
Not your average fish 'n’ chips joint, this
healthy restaurant uses only organic veg-
etables and quality fish products to serve up
a fancy take on a fast food classic. The spiced
‘Skyronnaise’ sauce is a special treat, and
their new location in the Volcano House by
the harbour is full of charm.

Mikkeler & Friends
Mikkeler & Friends offers twenty different
craft beers on draft, and most of them are
from Denmark’s Mikkeller brewery. Even on
a quiet night, this comfortable place is full of
beer enthusiasts thirsty for something a little
different.
Hverfisgata 12
8 Kaldi Bar
A small, stylish drinking hole popular with
the after-work business crowd, this is a
great place to feel a little classier and drink
with dignity. The beer selection is top-notch,
and the handcrafted interior tips the scales
of upscale rustic charm. You can be certain
that conversation will rule, not loud music.

9Mengi
Mengi (“Set”) was born as an experimental
place to host intimate shows where the artist
gets to perform in front of small crowds.
Hosting anything from art performances,
lectures and workshops to music gigs, Mengi
snugly seats 50 people. Admission is gener-
ally 2,000 ISK.
