amounted to 5.8° C at the surface, 4.9° at 100
meters and 2.8° at 200 meters. At depths great-
er than 200 meters the year to year variations
were small.
East of Langanes (Fig. 7) the temperature
decrease in recent years is apparent down to
a depth of 200 meters. The corresponding de-
crease in salinity, while very pronounced in the
surface layers during the last four years, is in-
conspicuous at depths greater than 100 meters.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION.S
From the results just described, as well as
íroni various other data collectecl in the area
north of Iceland during spring and summer
in the years 1924—1939 and 1947—1968 (Stefáns-
son 1962), the following conclusions can be
drawn with regard to sea temperature:

various depths at station L-3 in June during
1) In the 8-year period 1924—1931 two oí
the summers were warm, four summers were
cold and two summers were exceptionally cold
(1924 and 1931).
2) In the 8-year period 1932—1939 most of
the summers were warm, two summers were
exceptionally warm (1936 and 1939), but two
sunnners were exceptionally cold (1932 and
1938).
3) In the 8-year period 1947—1954 one
summer was exceptionally warm (1947) and one
exceptionally cold (1949), but otherwise warm
and cold summers alternated.
4) In the 8-year period 1955—1962 most of
the summers were warm, one exceptionally
warm (1960), but onlyl one definitelv cold
(1958).
5) In the 6-year periocl 1963—1968 one
summer was exceptionally warm (1964), one
