deep region northeast of Iceland. This increase
in the width of the ice belt in the oceanic
area north of Iceland is likely to increase the
frequency of clrift ice in North Icelandic
Waters. A knowledge of the stratification, i.e.
the salinity in the surface layer, in late winter
between Iceland and Jan Mayen in connection
with knowledge of the atmospheric circulation
and air temperature may be a tool for pre-
dicting sea ice in Icelandic waters in spring
and summer.
