Nám á framhaldsskólastigi er hægt að hefja þegar að loknum grunnskóla en nám á sérskóla- og háskólastigi krefst þess að ákveðnu námi á lægra skólastigi sé lokið. Heildarfjöldi nær til nemenda í dagskóla, kvöldskóla og í fjamámi. Iðnnemar á samningi em taldir með framhaldsskólanemendum. Námsmenn erlendis em taldir samkvæmt gögnum Lánasjóðs íslenskra námsmanna um námsmenn sem leita aðstoðar sjóðsins; um aðra námsmenn erlendis em ekki upplýsingar. Hver nemandi er talinn aðeins einu sinni, þannig að stundi nemandi nám í tveimur skólum þá telst hann aðeins í öðmm þeirra.
