Statistics Iceland compiles and publishes
the consumer price index, build-
ing cost index, producer price index
and related price indices every month.
Indices reflect economic and price
developments within the society.
Consumer price index
The consumer price index measures price
changes of a specific basket of goods and
services which is the base of the index.
Prices of an extensive sample of goods and
services are collected for a week during the
middle of each month for measuring price
changes. The index is rebased in March
every year and is mainly based on a house-
hold expenditure survey. The consumer
price index measures inflation and is
used for monetary targeting and indexa-
tion of financial obligations according to
the law on interest rates and indexation.
Building cost index for residential housing
The building cost index measures changes
in the building costs of a residential apart-
ment house in the capital area. Prices
of inputs, e.g. building materials and
labour cost are measured. The building
cost index is mainly used for indexation
of contracts in the construction industry.
Producer price index
The producer price index measures changes
in prices received by domestic producers
of power intensive metal products, marine
products, food products and other indus-
try products. The base for the index is the
sum of sold manufacturing products and
is updated annually. Price measurements
are based on transaction data collected
from sampled domestic producers.
