Statistics Iceland has been managing
statistics on research and development
since 2013. Data is collected from the busi-
ness enterprise sector, the higher educa-
tion sector, government sector and private
non-profit organisations.
Research and development expenditures
increase by 7%
In 2013 the total R&D expenditures were
35.2 billion ISK, but in 2014 they had gone
up to 37.6 billion, which is an increase of
7% between years. In 2014 the total R&D
expenditure amounted to 1.89% of GDP,
but in 2013 the expenditure amounted
to 1.87%. The share of R&D expenditure
between sectors is as follows: 57% in the
business enterprise sector, 35% in the
higher education sector and 8% in the
government sector and private non-profit
organisations. Those percentages remain
the same between years.
Of total R&D expenditures in the higher
education sector (which refers to all univer-
sities, colleges of technology and other
institutions of post-secondary education,
including hospitals) the highest expendi-
ture in 2014 are in the field of Social
sciences, 3.9 billion; followed by Medical
sciences, 3.3 billion. The R&D expendi-
tures in other fields of science are divided
as follows: Natural sciences, 2.5 billion;
Engineering and technology, 1.3 billion;
Humanities, 1.2 billion; and Agricultural
sciences, 1 billion.
The number of researchers in the higher
education sector was 1,955 in 2014, of
which 248 were PhD students; 957 were
male and 998 female. Full-time equivalent
researchers were 1,033.
