Greenland. Spring came early in Greenland in 1996. All plots were green in Narsarsuaq on
April 15 and the soil was frost-free down to a depth of 20 cm. In 1997 the soil in Narsarsuaq
was frost-free down to a depth of 30 cm on April 26.
The experiment in Narsarsuaq was very strange when it was harvested inl998. The
grass was short and developed late. Late fertilization, drought, mites or insects may have
delayed development. However, few P. pratense plants had reached anthesis by that time.
In 1997 the first plots in Upemaviarsuk tumed green before April 20 and the top soil
was frost-free. Lavang became green earlier than other varieties. Seida was damaged by
winter kill (Table 6).
In Upemaviarsuk timothy reached the heading stage around July 12 in 1998. Tables 9
and 10 show dates for the different developmental stages in Greenland in 1996 and 1997.
