7. Induced Abortion (cf. table V)
1986. During the year 685 artificial abortions took place under the Birth Control Act. Social
indications had been taken into consideration in 611 cases, medical indications in 33 cases and
social as well as medical indications had been taken into consideration in 39 cases.
1987. During the year 695 artificial abortions took place under the Birth Control Act. Social
indications had been taken into consideration in 592 cases, medicial indications in 48 cases and
social as well as medical indications had been taken into consideration in 55 cases.
8. Accidents
The rate of deaths by accidents (including suicides) was in 1986 0.54 and 0.50 in 1987 per
1000 of the whole population.

9. Health Personnel (cf. table I)
The total number of licensed doctors in Iceland was 973 at the end of the year 1986 and
1,014 at the end of the year 1987 where of 693 were resident in Iceland 1986 and 721 1987.
The number of midwives at work was 189 at the end of the year 1986 and 181 1987. Trained
nurses at work were 1,657 at the end of the year 1986 and 1,709 1987.205 dental surgeons
were working in the country 1986 and 213 1987.
10. Hospitals
1986. The number of hospitals, large and small, in 1986 was 39 in the whole country with
3,521 beds or 14.5 beds per 1000 inhabitants. Of these, 23 were general hospitals with 2,171
beds or 8.9 beds per 1000 inhabitants. Admissions were 56,093, hospitalization days were
1,232,359 and the occupancy rate was 95.9%. The average stay per patient was 22.0 days and
5.1 days per inhabitant.
Other health institutions numbered 14 in 1986 with 636 beds or 2.6 beds per 1000 inhabi-
tants.
1987. The number of hospitals, large and small, in 1987 was 39 in the whole country with
3,573 beds or 14.5 beds per 1000 inhabitants. Of these, 23 were general hospitals with 2,207
beds or 9.0 beds per 1000 inhabitants. Admissions were 61,014, hospitalization days were
1,210,759 and the occupancy rate was 94.0%. The average stay per patient was 19.8 days and
4.9 days per inhabitant.
Other health institutions numbered 14 in 1987 with 637 beds or 2.6 beds per 1000 inhabi-
tants.
