NEW DELHI — On 27
February the Union Minister of
Commerce and Industry Kamal
Nath said that in view of the
diverse economic strengths of
India and Iceland, there is tre-
mendous scope for a mutually
beneficial economic and com-
mercial engagement between
the two countries. He was ad-
dressing the trade delegation
from Iceland, led by the Min-
ister of Education, Science &
Culture, Republic of Iceland,
Ms. Þorgerður Katrín Gunnars-
dóttir, here.
Speaking on the occasion,
Kamal Nath said that there is
an urgent need for the business
leaders of the two countries to
come closer for greater interac-
tion and business cooperation.
“Few people in India realize
that Iceland, situated close to
the Artic Circle, is a modern
and developed country with a
high standard of living. Indo-
Icelandic bilateral relations
have been warm and friendly,
but lacking in substantive con-
tent. Our trade has been negli-
gible — barely 17 million dol-
lars — completely in contrast
to the warm political relation-
ship we enjoy.
“India can offer top quality
products such as ready-made
garments, cotton made ups
and accessories, cotton yarn
and fabrics, man-made fibres,
drugs and pharmaceuticals,
fine chemicals and gems and
jewellery, to name a few. India
has also emerged as a force to
reckon with in the field of infor-
mation technology, IT-enabled
services, pharmaceuticals, re-
search and development, finan-
cial and accounting services and
health care. We can offer these
services to Iceland at competi-
tive rates,” he stressed.
Kamal Nath further said
that India and Iceland must also
initiate cooperation in some
high technology areas that
are Iceland’s strength such as
earthquake precursor studies,
hydrogen energy, advanced fish
processing and biotechnology.

Risk level 2
in Iceland
due to bird
flu in Sweden
unnecessary

Jarle Reiersen
REYKJAVÍK — Jarle Rei-
ersen, veterinarian of poultry
disease with the Agriculture In-
stitute, who sits on the reaction
group of the Institute for bird
flu, says there is no need to go
to risk level 2 due to the disease,
though tufted ducks have been
discerned with a serious variant
form of bird flu in Sweden.
In an interview with Mor-
gunblaðið Online in late Feb-
ruary, Jarle Reiersen said that
this bird stock does not fly to
Iceland and there is little dan-
ger it will come to Iceland. The
country will not go to risk level
2 because it would be an ex-
tremely expensive and difficult
undertaking for poultry farmers.
If the flu is discerned in Britain,
on the other hand, that risk level
will be declared without delay.
Preparation now stands by
to go to risk level 2 but that im-
plies sheltering all poultry ani-
mals, and an order would have
to be given out concerning this.
General disease control regula-
tions would be tightened.
