DEATHS
Phyllis Higginson Ashby
30 March 1916 – 13 February 2006
Phyllis Higginson Ashby passed
away of natural causes on February 13,
2006 at the age of 89. She was born
to Mary Erickson and Ralph Higginson
on March 30, 1916. She married Ger-
ald Bates Ashby on June 19, 1937. She
was preceded in death by her husband,
her brother, Ralph Higginson and sister,
Ruth Higginson Lewis, brothers-in-law,
Dean and LaMar Ashby.
She grew up in Spanish Fork and
had a happy childhood despite the loss
of her father at age two.
Her highest priority in life was her
family and her faith; she was a member
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
day Saints. She was a devoted wife and
mother, and has been a guiding influence
to her 16 grandchildren and 17 great
grandchildren. She loved the Savior
and wanted to do his work on the earth.
She served in Church calling in the Mu-
tual, Primary, Sunday School, and Relief
Society. She loved serving the women
of the 5th ward as their Relief Society
President and as a visiting teacher.
She was actively involved in the
Daughters of Utah Pioneer and the Ice-
landic Association of Utah. She served
as the historian for the Association; her
home was used as the meeting place
for the board of directors and was often
called the clubhouse. She prided herself
in the fact that she was an Icelander and
loved those people that lived on the Ice-
landic bench in Spanish Fork.
She was a beautician in Spanish
Fork as a young adult. After her husband
died in 1965 she worked at the Beehive
Clothing store in Spanish Fork. She
loved working there knowing that she
helped her customers with the clothing
they needed to enter the temple.
She stayed close to her childhood
friends throughout her life. These twelve
women, the “Ugly Dozen,” loved one an-
other and served each other throughout
their lives.
She is survived by her five children:
Blaine (Carol) Ashby, David (Bonnie)
Ashby, Marilyn Ashby, Ann (Dennis) Gull,
and Garth (Kay) Ashby. Her grandchil-
dren: Steven, Karen, Joe, Gerald, Alan,
Christina Ashby, Joanna Perez, Maryann
Dalton, John, Ryan, Melanie and Lisa
Gull, Amanda Osborne, Chad, McCall,
Jason Ashby and Irma Tsosie. She is
also survived by her sisters-in-law: Karla
(Dean) Holm, LaVerne Higginson, Gloria
Ashby and many nieces and nephews
who loved her dearly.
Funeral services were held at the
Spanish Fork LDS 5th ward chapel 1000
E. 200 S. on Friday February 17, 2006.
Interment, Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
