David Jón Fuller
The work of two contem-porary Icelandic artists, Hekla Dögg Jónsdóttir
and Jón Óskar, will be featured
at “Modern Raiders,” an exhibit
in the Visions series curated by
Icelandic artist Hannes Lárus-
son and coordinated by Sigrid
Johnson, Head of the Icelandic
Collection and Birna Bjarna-
dóttir, Chair of the Icelandic
Department at the University of
Manitoba.
Jón Óskar was born in
Reykjavík, Iceland in 1954 and
his mother Ragnheiður Jóns-
dóttir is also a visual artist.
He says his work is often a
mixture of techniques. “I work
equally on paintings, drawings
and photographs,” he says.
“The paintings are generally
done with beeswax and oil, but
the drawings are of many ori-
gins and I readily use what is
closest at hand. Thus they are
often a blend of pencil, ink, cof-
fee, wax and actually whatever
produces colour or texture.”
His “Delaware” series was
developed out of the well-
known work by Emanuel
Gottlieb Leutz, “Washington
Crossing the Delaware.” It’s a
painting he has known of and
was moved by since he saw it
in a book as a child. As he grew
older, he had great interest in
American painters including
Larry Rivers, who painted a
particular variation of the fa-
mous heroic painting. “It has
always since been in the back
of my mind to do my own ver-
sion of it,” says Jón Óskar.
“My references on the other
hand are rather unclear, since
the painting is based on a map
of the Delaware River rather
than Washington himself. Then
there are also blended in it ref-
erences from the storybook of
my youth. Thus there are so
many references stacked in the
picture that they drown into
each other and rather become
a meaningless ‘over-all’ visual
surface in the way of Jackson
Pollock.”
Hekla Dögg Jónsdóttir, was
born in Reykjavík in 1969 and
studied art in Iceland, Germany
and the United States. She has
curated several art shows and is
one of the founders of Gallery
Kling & Bang.
Hekla creates sculptures
that encompass the space they
are displayed in, like installa-
tions. However, she has started
referring to some of her works
as “constellations.”
“When I was in school, in-
stallation was the thing to think
about in a way, if you were
doing that kind of work into
a room,” she says, “but now I
realize that I seem to be inter-
ested of using sculptures with
images, either photographs
or video, and I realized the
‘space’ doesn’t really matter
— of course it matters how you
put it up, but not necessarily the
space. In an installation, you
have to have the whole space
and maybe you have a hard
time being in a group show.
“And then I learned this
word, ‘constellation,’ that to-
tally made sense.”
