EDMONTON, AB — The
Norðurljós Icelandic Society
of Edmonton held its annual
þorrablót on Saturday 25 Feb-
ruary 25. After Rev. Don Ol-
son said grace, a feast of beef,
chicken, salmon, herring and
traditional Icelandic foods was
enjoyed by 215 people, includ-
ing more than 30 young adults
and as many children.
Younger members of the
club Don Sigvaldason (pro-
gram chair) and Connie Clark
(MC for the evening) are doing
a great job of assuming lead-
ership. The number of young
people in attendance and in
leadership roles bodes well for
the future of the Icelandic Ca-
nadian Club of Edmonton.
The singing of the Cana-
dian and Icelandic national an-
thems and the fjallkona song
(“Fósturlandsins Freyja”) was
led by members of the Saga
Singers, following which the
fjallkona, Helen Johannson of
Markerville, addressed the au-
dience on the Icelandic tradi-
tion of the fjallkona. Walter and
Julie Sopher and Solli and Shir-
ley Sigurdson received honor-
ary life memberships.
Solli Sigurdson entertained
with several songs in both
Icelandic and English. Later,
a dance commenced with a
“Grand March” and live music
by Randy Glen and the Silhou-
ettes.
About 20 door prizes were
distributed. Guests of the club
included Jane Ross, Curator,
Royal Alberta Museum; Mr.
Rick Miller, MLA for Edmon-
ton-Rutherford; and Ron Good-
man of the Leif Eiriksson Ice-
landic Club of Calgary.
