And it engaged the elusive “younger generation” because it was their show all along. The brainchild of Consul General Atli Ásmundsson, NÚNA (now) was a series of cultural events in Winnipeg as well as Gimli. Whether it was the eclectic mix of Icelandic and Manitoba fi lms selected by Caelum Vatnsdal, or the multi- media dance performance New Icelander Project by Freya Bjorg Olafson, or concerts by the Weakerthans, the focus was on new perspectives. Different viewpoints and ways of expressing them came together at the collage party or- ganized by Paul Butler, which saw artists collaborating and playing off each other. A va- riety of literary voices spoke through the works debuted at a quadruple book launch in Gimli with works by Gil- lian Johnson, Katrina Ander- son and Marjorie Anderson, Birna Bjarnadóttir and Martha Brooks. The mix of new art laced with Icelandic and Manitoban perspectives did not go unno- ticed by local news media or those in town for the Icelandic National League Convention, which overlapped with NÚNA (now). Praise for the work of the Consul came from no less than the President of Iceland Dr. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, who in his address at the INL Convention called NÚNA “a brilliant example of the path we should all follow in coming years,” when it comes to the next generation of Icelandic art and culture. What is ahead for NÚNA? Arne MacPherson indicated that more theatre from Iceland might be part of next year’s events, and enthusiasm for fu- ture possibilities was echoed by others on the curatorial board. If this year’s festival is any indication, NÚNA (now) has a bright future indeed. For more coverage on NÚNA (now), please visit www. lh-inc.ca. PHOTO: LEIF NORMAN The collage party.
