Nine hundred and seventeen teams from 16 countries descended on Blaine, Min-nesota for the Schwan USA Cup, July
13-18, 2010, the largest youth soccer tourna-
ment in North America. These 15,000 play-
ers and coaches along with 10,000 family and
friends enjoyed a wonderful week of fun and
friendship.
Included in the 917 teams were five teams
from Iceland consisting of three girls teams un-
der 14 years old, one girls team under 15 years
old and one girls team under 16 years old.
The Icelandic American Association of Min-
nesota held a meet and greet picnic on the first
day of competition for a hundred or so attendees.
Also attending was a girls team from Minnesota
that was partnered with the Icelandic girls.
A cruel experience happened the second day
of competition. The temperature in Blaine rose
to 92 degrees with a dew point of 81 degrees.
Dew points in the 40’s are comfortable. 50’s are
OK, 60’s are getting miserable, 70’s are oppres-
sive and 80’s are unbearable. The games went on
but were played under a yellow flag with many
water game stops.
The Icelandic teams had good showings. In
the girls under 14 division, Breiðablik I won
their first round playoff game 6-0 but lost 4-2
in the second round playoff game. Breiðablik
II won all their preliminary games with sixteen
goals scored against opponents, allowing only
one goal scored against them. They won their
second round playoff game but lost the third
round playoff game. Breiðablik III won their
second round playoff game but lost the third
round playoff game.
In the girls under 15 division, Fylkir won
two of their preliminary games but lost their
first playoff game. In the girls under 16 division,
Fylkir won two of their preliminary games and
tied two of their preliminary games but lost their
first playoff game.
Many new friends were made, a great time
was had by all and everyone left with fond mem-
ories and dreams of coming to the tournament
next year.
