The salmon fishing sea-son in Iceland has been excellent so far this
summer. “It is so good that
you hardly dare to believe it’s
true,” said Þorsteinn Þorsteins-
son at the Federation of Icelan-
dic River Owners.
“The rivers that were the
first to start, Nordurá, Thverá
and Blanda, have all provided
an outstanding catch,” Thor-
steinsson told Morgunblaðið.
“It is not just the fish which
are coming early this year but
there are a lot more of them so
I’m beginning to be convinced
that the situation will continue
like this,” he added.
Blanda is the “sputnik”
river this year. An angler who
was fishing at the river’s lower
part last weekend caught 52
salmon in two days, and they
were all caught on a fly.
The largest salmon was 103
centimetres and 22 pounds but
the angler, along with other
eyewitnesses, saw two other
fish that were even bigger.
In Fljótsá river, which is
one of the county’s best Arctic
char fishing rivers, the season
was also off to a good start.
One angler caught 40 char and
three salmon in a day and a
half, and sometimes he caught
two fish at once.

The harbour in Bakkafjara, Landeyjahöfn in south Iceland was formally opened at a special ceremony recently when the
Westman Islands’ ferry Herjólfur docked there
for the first time. The new harbour and sailing
route shortens the ferry ride to the Westman Is-
lands from three hours to half an hour.
“Landeyjahöfn is not only a man-made con-
struction, it is also a Herculean task,” Minister of
Transport Kristján L. Möller said at the harbour’s
inauguration, explaining that a few years ago no
one could have imagined a harbour in this lo-
cation but modern technology made it possible,
Morgunblaðið reports.
Möller and Elliði Vignisson, mayor of the
Westman Islands, cut the ribbon together at the
inaugural ceremony.
Steinar Magnússon, one of Herjólfur’s cap-
tains, said the trip had gone well and that the
weather couldn’t have been better.
People living in the Westman Islands were
invited to sail on the ferry’s maiden journey to
the new harbour. The ferry was crowded with is-
landers, MPs and ministers.
In Landeyjahöfn the people disembarking
the ferry were greeted with a feast. Rev. Hall-
dór Gunnarsson at Holt, blessed the new harbour
and led a prayer for those in attendance.
He said it was a blessing that no serious ac-
cidents had occurred during the harbor construc-
tion – workers had to flee the flooding caused by
the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull at one point.
Landeyjajöfn lies at the mouth of Markar-
fljót river, a distance of approximately 100 kilo-
metres from Reykjavík.
The Westman Islands’ ferry used to sail from
Thorlákshöfn, which is only 50 kilometres away
from Reykjavík, but with the shorter sailing
route, the time of the combined journey from the
capital to the Westman Islands still drops from
four hours to two and a half.
