To the editor,
I am searching for infor-
mation about brother and sis-
ter Anna and Halldór (Dori)
Halldórsson and wondered if
you would happen to have any
or could direct me to someone
who may be able to help.
The reason I am asking you
is in a letter 8 June 1997 to Bar-
bara Bjerring of Victoria, after
she had responded to an inqui-
ry he posted in L-H, Dr. Ulfar
Bragason, Director Sigurður
Nordal Institute in Reykjavík
(who had been writing papers
and giving lectures about Jón
Halldórsson of Nebraska) not-
ed that you and John Tucker
had been trying to locate Ice-
landers in the Victoria area. Dr.
Ulfar Bragason is no longer
listed at the Institute.
Anna b 22 June 1900, and
Halldór b Sept 1899, Olga
Township, Cavalier County,
North Dakota were children
of Jón Kristján Halldórsson
who emigrated from Iceland in
1886 and his wife Rósa. About
1905 the family was among
the group of Icelanders from
North Dakota who emigrated
to the Wynyard/Big Quill area
of Saskatchewan. In 1911 they
were at Twp 32, Range 16.
Rosa died there in 1913. We
do not yet know when/where
Jon Kr. died.
Apparently at some time
Anna joined Halldór, who had
relocated to the Vancouver wa-
terfront where he was a boat
mechanic. They lived together
for a while until Halldór (Dori)
vanished. Anna became a re-
cluse of sorts and was eventu-
ally cared for by Karl and Bar-
bara Bjerring. Anna died 27
October 1996 at Victoria.
I am interested in learning
more about both, but more
specifically about what became
of Halldór.
Any information or
redirection you can provide
would be most appreciated.
Thanks,

To the editor,
I am very disappointed in
Lögberg-Heimskringla. What
does one have to do (or be)
to get noticed in L-H. Awhile
back, my sister sent in a picture
of Selkirk’s singer Lorne Ste-
fanson, who was voted “King
of the Saddle” week after week
on the Western Hour, with host
George McCloy, even with a
broken leg, but nothing but si-
lence from L-H. Lorne has a
large family, all musical and
most of them sing. Is he not
entitled to recognition?
If he refuses to be inter-
viewed, I’m sure his son Brad
would oblige so get with it
L-H, let’s see some action.
Sincerely,
Helga Logan
Ed. Note: Lorne’s not well
but if anyone can provide names
and phone numbers, we’d love
to do a nostalgia piece. Lorne
was an excellent performer.
“King of the Saddle” was in
the 1950’s on CJOB. We need
to reach back more than half
a century. We need newspaper
clips, interviews, photos, con-
tacts. If anyone has a scrap-
book about the Western Hour,
it would be wonderful. George
McCloy, unfortunately, died in
2009. This is the sort of proj-
ect where we need our reader’s
help. Write or send email if
you have memories of Lorne,
the theatre, the Western Hour,
other members of our commu-
nity who also performed on the
Western Hour.

Dear Friends,
Sorry that my renewal is
so late. As I was in Iceland for
three weeks I didn’t look in
my mail-box. When on vaca-
tion I never do. But I want to
add my gratitude for Lögberg-
Heimskringla. It is always a
good day when it appears in
the box. And I want to express
my pleasure with Bill as an
editor. As you know there is a
long tradition for literary text,
poems and short stories, in
Lögberg-Heimskringla, since
in old days when Lögberg and
Heimskringla were still writ-
ten in Icelandic and some of
the editors were writers too.
And now one of the most out-
standing Canadian writers is
our editor!
So, let’s keep him, and
keep him well. Let’s enjoy his
short stories, memories and es-
says for a long time.
Best regards to all of you,
and best wishes to Lögberg-
Heimskringla.
Sincerely,
Böðvar Guðmundsson
