I was shy and a little bit timid of the world at that time but I have always had a thirst to expand my vision and challenge my point of view. So, I decided to throw myself in the deep end and embark on a journey. Now, six years later, I consider Canada my second home and count the days until I return. I always visit my family in Riverton, Manitoba. Riverton is a tiny quiet little town with the best of people. The quiet is what I like and I spend my days just strolling around the beautiful prairie. I am reminded, with its never- ending horizon, that the road is endless and it encourages me to keep on walking forward. I regard Riverton as my place of healing, where I fine tune my balance and regain my energy. For me, it’s a special place and finally after many years of telling my family and friends about my oasis, I took my mother over there. After four days in the midst of the prairie she turned to me and said “I understand now.” I really like the fact that I can disappear in my oasis and keep to myself and my thoughts, surrounded by the warm embrace, generosity and kindness of my Canadian friends and family. However, a few years back, an event led to the end of my disappearance and solitude. This is what happened. It was a beautiful, sunny, quiet day in Riverton and I was getting ready to cut the grass. I put on my shorts and a bikini top, my cowboy hat,my Ipod and my sunglasses and headed out confident and ready to embrace the day. I had been cutting the grass for a while and was at the end of the road just by the highway, when I saw a car passing by. I thought nothing of it and when the driver honked his horn and waved, I returned his wave in the same manner. “Oh how I love Canadians,” I thought. Rural hospitality is the best – always so nice and friendly. Another car passed by with another honk and a wave, which again I returned with a smile. A couple of minutes later a pickup truck drove by, filled with construction workers waving, honking, smiling and yelling something out which I couldn‘t hear, seeing that I had my Ipod on. But, I smiled and grinned on the inside, seeing that I had just turned 30 and thought my better years were behind me.“I still have it,” I thought, and kept grinning. Moments later they passed again, honked like crazy and yelled something I still couldn’t make out. And then it struck me – a breeze, and I looked down. At some point my bikini top had come undone and apparently I had been cutting the grass like a very free-spirited individual for a while. I have never felt more embarrassed in my life. I ran into the house, down to the basement, under the covers and remained there for the rest of the day. When the height of embarrassment went down, I told my family about my incident and man, did they ever laugh. However, to rescue the remains of my honour, I was fired from grass cutting duties on the spot and was forbidden to even get near the end of the road unless I had a hoodie on. Time passed and em- barrassment turned into laughter. I was looking forward to being reunited with my family in Riverton this summer. Well, that was until my cousin called and told me that one of her friends had asked when that foreign chick was coming back, and at what time I would be cutting the grass.
